I’m fond of a good embroidery project because it’s essentially creativity and relaxation rolled into one. Extra credit if you can work on it while marathoning your favorite Halloween films (and no judgment if Hocus Pocus is playing on repeat).
This design brings together a bit of cross stitch, some applique, and an abundance of charm. Whether you display it in a hoop or frame it as the spooky gallery-worthy artwork it is, you’ll probably want to leave it hanging long after Halloween.

To begin, here’s everything you’ll need.
Collect These Materials
- Free haunted house applique template
- 7-inch embroidery hoop
- 6 x 8 inch frame (optional)
- Linen fabric OR Aida cloth
- Fusible interfacing (Pellon 805 or Heat ‘n Bond Lite)
- Embroidery floss (charcoal gray, purple, black, white, and pale gray)
- Fabric remnants
- Carbon paper
- Scalloped fabric scissors (optional)

Haunted Mansion Embroidery
Discover how to create the most stylish haunted house embroidery for Halloween. Welcome to your sweet haunted home!

Begin by cross-stitching the upper words “home sweet” using two strands of embroidery floss.

Trim your pattern and secure it to your fabric to serve as a guide for spacing the bottom letters. Align everything, then cross-stitch the lower word “home.”

For the applique pieces, begin by tracing the shapes onto the paper side of your interfacing. Place the interfacing paper-side up against the reverse of your fabric, then press it with a hot, dry iron.Cutout the shape (I used scalloped fabric shears along the bottom of the roof, though this step is entirely optional).

Remove the paper backing from each applique.

I positioned the house pieces over the pattern to align everything, then secured them with small strips of tape.

Position the house over the linen fabric, align it carefully, and press the edges with an iron. Avoid ironing over the tape. After the edges are firmly attached, take off the tape and iron the entire house.

Press the rest of the pieces onto the linen.

Move the design’s remaining elements onto the linen. I prefer using dressmaker’s carbon paper, which is available at fabric shops. Place it between the pattern and your project, then trace the design. It will transfer onto the fabric for you to embroider.

Using one strand of embroidery floss and a running stitch, sew around each applique piece. For the windows, I only stitched the details and did not bother sewing around the complete shape.To finish, take it out of the hoop and place it in a frame, ironing it first if needed.
If your eyesight is weak or you are new to cross-stitching, consider using Aida cloth instead. It is an excellent choice for beginners, and you can also find it in different colors to give this project a slight variation.
