Today, I’m sharing an incredibly easy free felt bunny pattern that you and the children can try making! Some time ago, we created these adorable little characters as a collection of pocket companions – along with the felt bunny shown here, there are also a felt teddy and felt squirrel to discover. Each one has its own tiny pocket bed, making them even more charming. This is an excellent sewing activity for beginners! This project has drawn plenty of inspiration from many different sources. We made these littleadorable felt softie bunnies after two guest posts appeared here on Red Ted Art – recently, we had some felt heart brooches and a felt heart mobile.. both of them were simply irresistible. Since our family loves bunnies, I decided to try making a few felt bunny brooches.
When Pip Squeak arrived, she asked whether we could create little felt softies instead. I said yes, particularly because I had been admiring these “Tin Can Pets” for aaaaaages.. and wanted to craft something along those lines with the children:

Making our adorable Cute Felt Softies Bunny also inspired me to create this post about Teaching kids to Sew! Have a look, and I hope you find it useful! That’s how I came up with this very easy felt bunny pattern to share with you today!
Isn’t this felt bunny pattern absolutely charming? It’s incredibly easy, and children are sure to enjoy it. My favorite part is how much curiosity it inspired in my kids. As I mentioned, we later created some Felt Bunny Brooches… during that winter, my children also made a collection of Felt Pet Ornaments for my Christmas present (they would also work wonderfully as backpack charms) AND, a few years afterward, they transformed the same idea into lovely Felt Bookmarks as another gift for me. SO SWEET!
Create tiny Felt Bunnies – Materials Required:
- Small felt scraps in the bunny colors you prefer
- One bigger piece (ours measured approximately 15cm x 5cm) for the bunny’s bed
- Our easy felt softie bunny template
- Embroidery thread in a contrasting shade
- A small amount of glue
- Ribbon (optional)
- Lace/ decorative ribbon (optional)

Sew Adorable Felt Softies with this Free Felt Bunny Pattern for Children
NOTE: my daughter and I made these after school on a very dark Friday afternoon.. I hoped to photograph the sewing process.. but this meant the pictures turned out a little darker than normal – so I’m sorry about the quality!!!!!
For this straightforward project, we used a running stitch. It’s wonderful for developing hand-eye co-ordination. However, you can experiment with any of these simple hand stitches for children! If you print the pattern at “double size”, you might even be able to try a blanket stitch!
Cut out all of your pieces… looking back…. when sewing with children, you MAY prefer to make one bunny piece that contains all the arms, legs and ears.. this creates a different “feel” for the finished felt softy, while also making it simpler to stitch. This “easier” option is included in the printable!
Another option is to make them slightly “longer”, allowing you to “tuck” more of the arms, legs and ears into the seams!
Begin stitching around your bunny with a basic running stitch.
Keep a small gap open along the side.
This is where you’ll add the stuffing. Afterwards, stitch the opening closed.
Attach the eyes, nose and heart with glue! (If you’re feeling especially enthusiastic, you could also try details such as a French Knot!).
Next, create a basic bed from a rectangular piece of felt. Stitch up one side, along the top, and then down the opposite side. If needed, use a few extra stitches to secure the lace.
I stitched the tinybed for the soft felt bunny, since Pip Squeak had no sewing energy left. I believe that is perfectly fine – children should ENJOY sewing, and it plays an important role in teaching kids to sew… so allow them to do as much or as little as they wish, while keeping them engaged!
