This Paper Straw Rocket Craft comes together quickly and easily, making it an excellent last-minute July 4th project. Of course, it can also be created for any patriotic celebration, outer-space theme, or simply as a fun anytime activity for children.
For this project, we joined two different paper straw colors with glue. To simplify it for toddlers, though, feel free to use just one straw color. Add cardstock and yarn, and you’ll have a craft that truly stands out!
July 4th Paper Straw Rocket Craft
For this rocket project, gather cardstock, paper straws, and yarn in patriotic shades, plus scissors and glue.
Paper Straw Rocket Craft Supplies Needed
- Cardstock – patriotic shades
- Paper straws – patriotic shades, in two different patterns.
- Yarn – patriotic shades
- Scissors
- Glue
Patriotic Rocket Craft Step by Step Directions
Start by gathering 6 paper straws with patriotic designs. When working with toddlers, keep the straws uncut.
We combined blue and white straws with red and white ones. To join the two designs, we took 3 straws of each type and sliced every straw in half.
Next, attach one half to the top of another half with glue. Repeat this process until every straw is connected, then allow the glue to dry fully. Regular glue is suitable, although hot glue can be used instead if preferred.
Once finished, adhere the straws side by side to form a group.
Then, use red, white, or blue cardstock to cut out a basic triangle.
Attach the triangle to the upper ends of the straws with glue.
Afterward, wind several loops of red, blue, or white yarn around your fingers.
Secure the yarn with a knot, then snip through the loops.
To finish, glue the yarn bundle onto the backside of the straws.

- We paired blue and white straws with red and white ones. To blend the designs, we used 3 of each and cut them all in half.
- Attach one straw half to the top of another using glue. Keep going until all the straws are joined, then let the glue dry completely.
- Next, secure the straws together next to one another.
- Then cut a basic triangle from red, white, or blue cardstock.
- Use glue to fasten the triangle to the top of the straws.
- Afterward, wind several loops of red, blue, or white yarn around your fingers.
- Knot the yarn securely and snip through the loops.
- Lastly, glue the yarn bundle onto the rear of the straws.
Notes
Regular glue is suitable for this project, but hot glue may be used instead if desired.
