Repurposing containers that might otherwise end up in the trash is one of my favorite methods for bringing greenery indoors. An outdated teapot or coffee cup, for instance, can become a delightful home for petite succulents or herbs.

For this arrangement, I used a bright thrifted creamer as a container for a small blooming succulent.

Handmade Planters

Browse nearby thrift shops for budget-friendly planters suitable for live or faux houseplants. If the store-bought appearance is not appealing, a fresh coat of paint can dramatically improve its look!

One of my most-loved makeovers began with unattractive metal planters from a thrift store, which I converted into a lookalike version of a Magnolia planter I had admired.

Woven Baskets

Inexpensive planter baskets are easy to find in countless styles. Walmart offers an extensive assortment priced below $30.

Besides concealing the unattractive plastic pots in which houseplants are typically sold, baskets introduce texture and an organic touch to your room’s decor.

Make Your Plants Shine: Terrariums and Other Creative Ideas

Tiny Terrarium

Interested in trying out life as a plant parent?? Starting with something small is an excellent approach! This simple and fashionable project is a lovely way to bring a mini terrarium into your home or workspace.

For this project, gather a little glass terrarium, a petite succulent or air plant, and some decorative filler for the bottom.

The Walmart terrarium kit includes sand, pebbles, stones, and moss, so I arranged each material in layers across the base. Afterward, I created a shallow hollow in the middle and positioned a miniature succulent there.

Because succulents require minimal moisture, lightly watering the terrarium from time to time once it has fully dried will help it remain attractive.

Ocean-Inspired Air Plant Container

Want to add a bit of playful charm to your plants?? This is among my favorite greenery projects!

Begin with a tall, spacious glass vessel. Cover the base with sand and assorted seashells. Afterward, arrange a few air plants inside to give it an underwater-inspired appearance.

To create the hanging sea urchin, gather a stick or section of driftwood, an empty urchin shell, an air plant, and a length of jute twine.

Wind the jute twine around the driftwood, then thread it through the urchin’s upper opening and secure it with a knot inside that is large enough to prevent the jute from sliding out.

Push the air plant through the wide opening to give it a jellyfish-like look. This plant sits just right, though a tiny dab of glue can help hold it securely without damaging the air plant.

Sea Shells & Air Plants

Consider this additional concept: combine air plants and shells to form an uncovered terrarium display.

Spread sand across the bottom of a transparent glass terrarium bowl to create a coastal atmosphere. Arrange shells and driftwood to provide spots where the air plants can sit.

For an enjoyable accent, place an air plant inside an urchin shell. Keep your air plants healthy by spraying their leaves with water every 2-3 days.

Elegant Succulent Planter

Because succulents require little maintenance, a succulent planter offers an ideal way to bring some greenery into your living room or bedroom.

For my arrangement, I selected an attractive green ceramic planter bowl to serve as the foundation for the succulents.

This succulent bowl is ideally sized for an end table, where it adds a lively burst of green.

When planting succulents, remember to choose a cacti/succulent potting blend designed to drain and dry rapidly. Since succulents come from desert environments, they do not thrive in heavy, excessively damp soil.

Living Wall Art

Living wall art offers an attractive way to add vitality to your walls. It consists of arranging plants inside a specially designed frame to create a living display. These frames may be crafted from materials such as wood or metal.

I recently placed this wood wall frame on display for my air plants, and I absolutely love it! The larger wine bottle riddling racks at Pottery Barn served as my inspiration, though they were beyond what I wanted to spend. Fortunately, I discovered this excellent, budget-friendly Amazon alternative that creates a similar appearance.

Although the air plants are currently small, they will expand and occupy more of the frame. Beginning with smaller air plants made this project an economical one to start.

Prefer not to care for live plants but still hoping to bring greenery into your home? This Succulent Wall Art project is an ideal solution! If you know how to operate a glue gun, you can create it yourself!

Looking After Your Indoor Plants

Watering Routines

For indoor plant watering, striking the right balance is essential. Too much moisture may cause root rot, whereas insufficient water can leave plants dry and wilted. Generally, most houseplants thrive in soil that remains damp but never waterlogged.

To know when your plants need water, test the soil by inserting your finger roughly an inch deep. If the soil feels dry, it is time to water. Soak the soil well and let any surplus water escape through the pot’s drainage hole.

Trimming and Upkeep

Consistent trimming and care can help indoor plants stay vigorous and attractive. As soon as you spot dead or yellow leaves, remove them because they may invite pests and illness.

Pruning can also promote denser growth while eliminating stretched-out or excessively long branches.

Make precise cuts with clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears, and disinfect your equipment between plants to help stop disease from spreading.

Fertilizer Fundamentals

Although indoor plants can typically live without fertilizer, routine nourishment may encourage strong growth and colorful foliage. Select a fertilizer made especially for houseplants and carefully follow the directions.

Generally speaking, most houseplants only require feeding once monthly throughout the growing period (spring and summer), then once every other month while dormant (fall and winter).

I’m a big fan of this Miracle Gro Houselplant Food; it comes in a pump container, so you simply add one squirt while watering… incredibly easy, with no blending or preparation needed.

Decorate Your Space with Plants

Houseplants are more than merely living décor – they serve as ever-changing design features! Positioning a plant thoughtfully can refresh a room with color, texture, and a hint of nature.

Full ferns create a laid-back atmosphere, pointed succulents lend a contemporary feel, and cascading vines help soften sharp edges. Consider plants the decorative accents that give your home a personal touch.

A snake plant brings architectural appeal to a bedroom and cleans the air as you sleep, while a flourishing pothos in the bathroom helps manage humidity with its abundant foliage.

I openly admit that I’m a plant enthusiast!! Once Christmas has passed and winter is at its coldest, I enjoy going a bit plant-crazy because it helps lift my seasonal blues!

My Mantle Receives a Green Refresh

As I refreshed my mantle for Spring (or simply hoped Spring would arrive), I combined plants with different decorative pieces, including books and photographs, for an eclectic look.

I placed a collection of framed botanical prints above the mantle; I’ve owned them for several years (from Magnolia at Target)

A trailing plant is an easy way to soften the corners of mantles and other furnishings, such as entryway tables.

For this arrangement, I set a Twister Lipstick Plant in a wicker basket at the mantle’s corner.

I positioned a tropical Xanthosoma plant at the other side of the mantle. Its bold foliage introduces additional color and texture to the room.

For the remaining mantle area, I arranged a pile of books, a secondhand cloche with a feather butterfly and moss beneath it, along with a metal architectural accent.

Add Greenery to Your Bookshelves

Bookshelves provide excellent places for bringing more greenery indoors. Set a prayer plant on a bookcase near a sunny window, where the gentle morning light appears to suit it perfectly!

You’ll also spot the small terrarium I mentioned earlier on this bookcase.

I placed several artificial greenery balls inside the DIY paper mache bowl.

Sofa Table

Behind the sectional, the slim sofa table had enough room for a vibrant Calathea plant, whose leaf patterns complement the surrounding colors

of the expansive gallery wall that fills much of the area behind the sectional.

Artificial Moss Branches

Faux Moss Branches are another simple DIY idea for bringing greenery into your home. Just gather a bag of assorted moss and several flexible faux branches. They make an excellent vase filler for every season!

Welcome Spring with Blossoming Branches & Bulbs

Branches with Spring Blooms

Adding flowering branches during spring is one of my favorite ways to introduce seasonal charm into my home. Cherry blossoms, dogwood, and magnolia branches are wonderful choices for bringing color and a fresh feeling to any space. In New England, I especially enjoy using Forsythia branches.

I prefer placing these branches in a tall vase or pitcher of water so they remain hydrated. If you want a more rustic appearance, try displaying them in a mason jar or an old-fashioned milk bottle.

It is an easy process: go outside and trim a few stems from a flowering Spring shrub or tree. Place them in a vase or pitcher filled with water, then wait. Within several days, the buds should begin to open.

The ideal time to try this is in late winter, once the buds start to swell.

These forsythia branches are shown after 5 days, and you can see how beautifully they are beginning to bloom!

Bulbs for Spring

Planting spring bulbs is another lovely way to bring seasonal greenery indoors. Tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths are simple to maintain and can provide a bright burst of color in any room.

For showcasing these bulbs, consider containers like terra cotta pots, woven baskets, or even aged metal pails.

I like arranging the bulbs in groups of three or five and setting them on a mantel or coffee table. For a more varied style, you can combine several different bulb varieties.

I discovered several varieties of pre-chilled Spring bulbs at Tulip World. For this arrangement, I am using a ceramic planter bowl from a thrift store.

I began by filling the container with potting soil and then pressed the bulbs into it. Afterward, I lightly watered the dish.

To enhance this Spring planter, I coiled a piece of grapevine garland around the bowl and topped the soil with preserved moss.

These straightforward DIY ideas allow you to bring greenery and seasonal character into your decor while staying within budget.
