Effective thrifting begins with understanding where those special finds are likely to appear. Do a little investigating before you leave home. Locate nearby thrift shops, especially those that suit your taste or match what you’re searching for.
Be sure to explore flea markets for unusual discoveries and antique stores for authentic period pieces. Also, don’t forget about digital options—from neighborhood selling sites to virtual yard-sale communities. Facebook Marketplace is an excellent source for pre-owned furniture.
Items I Always Bring Along
Although they may be less exciting than the treasures themselves, suitable tools make thrifting simpler and more satisfying. I always keep a compact measuring tape in my purse. Before smartphones became more advanced, I also carried a magnifying glass to decipher tiny label text or inspect an item’s details, but these days I use the magnifier on my iPhone to examine markings and similar features.
One especially useful trick is using Google’s image search through the Google app. It can identify items you come across, which is useful when you’re unsure what something is (it happens!), but I find it especially handy for quickly researching stamps on plates or pottery.

Whenever I visit a flea market, I usually try to secure a better price by grouping several items together.

Experienced thrifters know how to identify craftsmanship among the clutter. Practice spotting the common indicators of well-built products and assess their general condition. A sharp eye makes it easier to separate valuable discoveries from pieces that have seen better days! If you ever notice me browsing secondhand stores, you’d likely find me turning items around to search for maker’s marks or hints about their value.
I’ve visited antique stores and secondhand shops for most of my life, so eventually you develop an instinct for it and learn to recognize the worthwhile pieces hidden among the rubbish!!

Vintage canisters bring personality to the kitchen. A thrifted mirror helps brighten a room and create more depth. In the living room, display playful accents and distinctive artwork discovered during your thrifting trips. Feel free to try different arrangements and discover where your treasures look best!

I took the lids off this collection of thrifted canisters and repurposed the containers as vases in my kitchen. Their vintage appearance and fruit pattern coordinate beautifully with the rest of my fall decor.

A vintage mirror adds brightness to a narrow living room wall while bouncing sunlight from the windows across the space. It also offers an opportunity to enliven an otherwise dull corner with a secondhand stool repurposed as a plant stand, along with a moss wreath placed on the mirror for one more natural accent.

Artwork is among the things I’m constantly searching for whenever I visit thrift and vintage stores. You never can tell what treasures you might uncover! I’ve discovered several well-made, one-of-a-kind artworks tucked behind piles at the thrift shop. Even when the piece itself isn’t to your taste, you can still pick up attractive wooden frames for a small portion of the price of new ones...and many modern frames are actually plastic designed to resemble wood.
Spring Foyer
Nearly everything styling this spring entryway table came from thrift shops or vintage sources. Although the table and lamp were purchased new, all the other pieces were found at stores in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Vintage Bazaar New England
Vintage Bazaar New England is a weekend market held four times each year. The Spring and Winter events take place indoors in Newington, NH, while the Summer and Fall markets are outside at Kimball Farms in Haverhill, MA.

THE COLLECTOR’S EYE
Located inside a historic barn in Stratham, NH, The Collector’s Eye is an antique and resale shop. Exploring every nook of this charming store is even more enjoyable with its creaky floors! I always find something worth taking home.
SAGE FARM ANTIQUES
Sage Farm Antiques can be found in North Hampton, NH, and is open just a handful of times annually. Over the years, I’ve discovered several pieces of my favorite garden decor there.
TODD FARM FLEA MARKET
Located in Rowley, Ma., Todd Farm flea market welcomes visitors on Sunday mornings from April through late Fall, when the weather becomes too cold. Hundreds of vendors gather here, offering all sorts of wonderful finds. The Todd Farm barn also features permanent dealers and a broad selection of lovely items!
