How to Sew a Felt Fox Ornament

You might recognise this charming Felt Fox Ornament as a relative of the previously featured Penguin Ornament and Reindeer Ornament! It belongs to a small collection of simple, circle-based Felt Ornaments that are fun to sew with children (or beginners!) and also features a felt Owl Ornament (TBC)!! I adore these decorations because they are so simple to stitch. You can pair a little fabric glue or hot glue with sewing, or sew everything by hand. Since they are created from circles, you don’t really need a pattern to make them (although there is one for the Penguin & Reindeer – you can modify the reindeer templates for the fox and owls). As noted, this is a delightful little felt decoration that is ideal for beginners! You can practise the running stitch, try an over stitch, or be adventurous and attempt my favourite, the blanket stitch! I have prepared a collection of basic hand-sewing stitches for you to discover!

Supplies needed for your Fox Ornament:

Felt in fox shades (I chose white and orange – but your fox may be any colour – perhaps use light blue and white to create an arctic fox?)
Recycled card for creating your template
A cup for tracing
Pencil
Scissors
Thread
Ribbon for hanging
A small amount of stuffing (toy filling, recycled pillow, bubble wrap, yarn scraps)
Hot glue (optional)

How to sew a fox ornament or key chain (step by step photo instructions)

As mentioned, this project gives you two crafts in one! You can therefore make the owl ornament as well (although I have also listed it separately for anyone interested!

Make your own templates

The attached guide concentrates on the owl, but the fox uses the same shapes, so the rest of this post will focus on the fox. You can also download the Reindeer Ornament printable and use that if you would rather not draw your own (the face is reversed, but it still works for the fox ornament).

Use a glass or cup to trace a circle. A jar lid will work just as well.

Sketch two white facial sections, along with a pair of ears for the fox. The “owl wing” is actually the same shape as the fox’s white facial details. They resemble a simple leaf.

It is shaped like a triangle with a rounded top:

You can now trace the shapes and cut out the felt.

Cut your felt shapes

You will require two orange circles, two white “leaf” pieces, and two orange ears shaped like rounded triangles. You will also need tiny circles for the fox’s nose, eyes, and rosy cheeks.

Here, you can once again see how the same pieces can be used for an owl or a fox:

Now let’s begin putting everything together!

Check your shapes fit the fox/ owl

Before you glue or stitch anything, arrange all the pieces together to make sure they “work” for you. For example, the ears should be slightly longer than necessary so that you can sew them into place.

When you are pleased with the arrangement, apply a little clear-drying fabric glue to secure the facial details. Allow them to dry.

Prepare for sewing

After the facial features have dried, take a short length of ribbon, fold it in half, and tie a knot.

Arrange the ears and ribbon, then lay the face over them. You may wish to pin everything in position to prevent the ears and ribbon from shifting while you sew.
