Whether you’re celebrating Memorial Day or the 4th of July, this Craft Stick Handprint Patriotic Gnome Craft offers children a delightful, hands-on way to honor the occasion. Collect craft sticks, patriotic hues, and those tiny handprints to get started.
Typically, gnomes are shown with white beards—or at least that’s what they want you to think. Our gnomes, however, may have colored their beards for the festivities. It adds an extra celebratory touch. Of course, you can give yours white beards as well, but a bright patriotic shade is always enjoyable.
Handprint Patriotic Gnome Craft
To create these handprint gnomes, you’ll need regular craft sticks, 9 for each gnome. You’ll also need acrylic paint in red, white, and blue, along with cardstock in red, white, and blue for the beards, plus a 1” circle paper punch, a star paper punch, scissors, and a glue stick.

- Standard craft sticks
- Acrylic paint – red, white, blue
- Cardstock – red, white, blue, and silver as well
- 1” circle paper punch
- Star paper punch
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Patriotic Gnome Craft Step by Step Directions
Start by coating your craft sticks with patriotic colors.
Each gnome requires 9 craft sticks. Since we planned to create several gnomes, we painted a large batch of sticks together. Allow the paint to dry fully.
As the paint dries, trace a hand onto red, white, or blue cardstock. Silver cardstock was used, too. Each gnome needs two handprints.
Trim out the handprint shapes.
After that, attach the handprints beside one another with glue. Then, use white cardstock to punch out a circle and adhere it near the upper center of the handprints.
The simplest method we use for joining craft sticks is to arrange them on a correctly sized scrap of cardstock. Secure 7 craft sticks in a vertical position.
Afterward, attach 2 additional craft sticks horizontally to form the hat’s brim.
Attach the hat above the nose on the handprints.
To finish, punch stars from white cardstock and glue them wherever you prefer.
