This Felt Gnome Christmas Ornament Craft is truly phe-gnome-enal! Adorable and incredibly simple to create, it makes a wonderful ornament project for decorating the Christmas tree. Craft a gnome wearing a hat in every color to make the festive season extra bright!
If you’ve been visiting us for a while, you may already know how I feel about using hot glue in children’s crafts. Whenever possible, I do my best to avoid it when young children are participating. Every now and then, however, a project truly requires it. That’s the case with these gnomes. Because of this, I’m labeling it a teen craft, although kids can certainly make it with proper supervision and assistance.
Of course, whenever gnomes are part of the project, it has to be charming and incredibly cute. These little gnomes feature another one of our favorite supplies, yarn, to create their beards. Put everything together, and this ornament project is sure to bring extra cheer to the Christmas tree.
Christmas Ornament Felt Gnome Craft
To create our gnome ornament, gather felt in any colors you prefer, yarn in tan or ivory, small wood beads, twine for hanging, hot glue, and scissors.

- Felt – colors of your choice
- Tan or ivory-colored yarn
- Small wooden beads
- Twine
- Hot glue
- Scissors
Gnome Christmas Craft Step by Step Directions
Begin by creating a yarn tassel.
To form the tassel, snip 20 pieces of yarn, each 8” long, and arrange them side by side.
Next, bend the yarn bunch in half and use another 8” strand to secure the top with a double knot; this becomes the gnome’s beard.
After that, cut a 10” length of twine and thread it through the tassel’s top. This creates the hanging loop for the ornament.
Thread a bead onto a 10” piece of yarn, then carefully tie it around the secured tassel as shown to create the gnome’s nose.
Shape the beard by trimming it into an upside-down triangle.
Next, snip a roughly 4”x4” square from the corner of the felt.
Cut once more from corner to corner with a rounded edge to create a curved triangle.
Roll the triangular felt piece into a cone, then carefully secure the edges with hot glue.
Carefully attach the felt hat to the tassel’s top, allowing it to overlap the nose slightly, and be sure the twine passes through the hat’s tip.
To finish, form a loop with the twine and place your phe-gnome-enal gnome ornament on the Christmas tree.
