Handprint Poinsettia Craft

When I was little, my mom brought home a fresh poinsettia each Christmas, almost as a yearly tradition. The wonderful part about this Handprint Poinsettia Craft is that you won’t have to purchase another one next year. Unless, of course, you choose to. It makes a gorgeous seasonal keepsake that can be treasured for many years.

My mom was never especially skilled at caring for plants. Honestly, I can’t recall her keeping a real plant indoors. That is, except for a poinsettia. I also only recently discovered that poinsettias can survive throughout the year, and even for several years. I had always assumed they were annual plants.

Our paper poinsettia can likewise be saved and enjoyed for years. This easy, charming Christmas project uses little more than handprints to create the plant’s lovely seasonal leaves. No gardening talent is necessary, although you will need green handprints to complete this cheerful Christmas craft.

Easy Handprint Poinsettia Christmas Craft

For this straightforward handprint poinsettia project, gather red, green, and yellow cardstock or paper, along with scissors and glue.

Supplies for the Handprint Poinsettia Craft

• Cardstock – red, green, yellow
• Scissors
• Glue

Step-by-Step Poinsettia Craft Instructions

First, collect red, green, and yellow paper or cardstock for this project. We prefer cardstock for most crafts because it is sturdier, though ordinary construction paper works well for this one too.

Trace around a hand and cut out 6 handprints from the red cardstock.

Choose two handprints, then spread glue along one side of either piece, near the thumb or pinky finger.

Set the second handprint cutout over the glued section of the first.

Continue joining the 6 handprints one at a time until they create a circle. Keep the fingers pointing outward and the palms directed toward the middle of the circular design.

Next, cut a little circle from yellow paper or cardstock and secure it in the middle of the handprint flower.

Also, snip a narrow strip from the yellow paper.

Roll and squeeze the yellow strip into a tiny ball.

Attach the crumpled yellow ball to the center of the yellow circle that is already glued to the middle of the handprint flower.

Then, trace and cut two green handprints to serve as the poinsettia leaves.

Secure the green handprint pieces next to each other.

To finish this beautiful holiday poinsettia project, glue the handprint leaves onto the back of the handprint flower.
