This is an especially enjoyable February activity to complete at home. Display the artwork in frames, share it with family and friends, or mail it to someone special. Creating homemade Valentine keepsakes couldn’t be simpler!

Required Supplies

• Round foam stamp brushes – use these for the ladybug’s spots (a cotton swab or pencil eraser can work too)

How to Create Valentine’s Day Handprint Art

1. Prepare your painting station.

Choose the patterns you want to make and print them on white paper or cardstock. Put the pages to one side for the moment.

Collect your paints and brushes – we used red along with two pink shades for the handprints. Black paint will also be needed for the finishing touches.

Place warm, soapy water in a large bowl or dish and bring it to your work area with clean cloths, towels, baby wipes, and paper towels to make tidying up easier.

2. Create the handprints.

Since most of the patterns use simple handprints, they’re fast and effortless to make! Brush non-toxic tempera paint over your child’s hand, then gently help them press it onto the paper.

Assist your child in lifting their hand, then rinse away the leftover paint. When creating several pages, add more paint between prints as necessary, and wash their hand afterward or whenever changing colors.

3. Creating designs with multiple handprints.

Some patterns require several handprints. To make the butterfly, press one hand onto the page, then use your child’s opposite hand to create the second print.

For the bouquet, create each handprint separately. We began with the pale pink print and then used the other hand for the second print pictured below.

Choose another shade for the last flower and press the final print. When you can, allow a few minutes between prints so the wet paint doesn’t blend where the designs overlap.

4. Making the ladybug design.

As with the remaining patterns, press one handprint to form the ladybug’s body, then leave it to dry.

After the print dries, use a round foam stamper (or a cotton swab or pencil eraser) to add black spots. Allow the artwork to dry fully.

Your Valentine’s Day Handprint Art is finished! Place it in a frame or attach it to a sheet of colored cardstock before giving it as a present.

After the paint fully dries, remember to add your child’s name and the date to the back of every page!
