Mess-Free Painting for Babies or Toddlers
This simple activity creates a lovely small present for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, and, as mentioned, it is completely mess-free! Naturally, if your toddlers enjoy making a mess, you can try it the messy way as well. At this age, my children did not enjoy having paint on their hands, so this made an excellent substitute for finger painting.
Materials for Mess-Free Painting
Washable Paint or Non-Toxic Acrylic Paint – When the paint stays enclosed inside the bag, acrylic or tempera paint is suitable. If you believe your baby or toddler might touch the paint once you finish, washable paint is the better choice.
White Cardstock – choose sturdy cardstock that will not tear while painting and can be removed from the bag easily afterward.
Heart Template – use a heart-shaped outline or create one yourself.

Follow these steps to create this mess-free painted artwork!
1. Begin by placing a few drops of paint onto cardstock inside a large resealable bag.
You may also secure some paper to a high chair, as demonstrated below. Be sure the paint is washable so it can be cleaned off the high chair without difficulty!
As always, watch your baby closely during this activity and never leave them alone with a bag. Sealing the bag’s opening with tape will prevent it from being opened.
2. Let your toddler move the paint around in any way they choose!
Allow them to press, spread, and blend the paint together.
3. Remove any thick paint pieces.
After your toddler or baby finishes “painting,” remove the sheet and use cardboard to scrape away paint that is overly thick or lumpy.
Then allow the sheet to dry fully.
4. Choose a frame and trim your painted paper so it fits inside.
You could also transform the artwork into a card.
5. With a separate sheet of paper or cardstock, add a message above and below your artwork, or print one from your computer.
7. Locate a heart outline online or trace a large heart in the middle using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Then cut out the heart.
8. Lay the white paper on top of your mess-free painted sheet.
You now have lovely toddler-made artwork that can be given as a present for any celebration.
