Maximize a small bathroom with these simple DIY bathroom storage shelves!
A few weeks ago, I showed you our DIY Master Bathroom Retreat. Sharing the “mostly” completed master bathroom inspired me to tackle several unfinished projects on my list. First up were bathroom storage shelves for the space above the toilet!
I teamed up with Kreg Jig and its new project plan website, dopten.com, to build this over toilet shelf. Using the Kreg Jig made the project incredibly easy! Now I have an ideal spot for keeping some of our bathroom essentials.
The unused area above the toilet in our master bathroom has always seemed like the perfect place for added storage. It is especially useful when you are working with a small bathroom.
Having extra toilet paper close by is always helpful… just in case. Once I decided what I wanted to keep there, I began designing the ideal over-the-toilet bathroom shelves.
Are you as excited about the result as I am? These farmhouse-inspired storage shelves would look great in any room, although they seem especially suited to the bathroom.
They fit perfectly above the toilet while offering plenty of space for supplies! The added touches on the shelves make them even more enjoyable.
For a little more character, I used a jigsaw to shape a vintage farmhouse-inspired curve along the top and bottom. That single feature transformed the shelves from plain store-bought boxes into something distinctive.
Then I took it a step further by adding metal accents to the fronts. I picked up flat bar aluminum pieces at the home improvement store. At only 1/16″ thick, they were simple to cut and drill.
They were installed in just a few minutes, and I really enjoy the added character. Naturally, I also placed a few knobs along the bottom. You can never have too many knobs and hooks in a bathroom!
To maintain a unified look in the bathroom, I chose the same knotty alder wood used for our wood vanity top. Instead of stain, I applied butcher block oil to highlight the wood’s natural tone and preserve its vintage appearance.
Afterward, I protected it with furniture wax for a smooth, gentle finish. The rich shade of the knotty alder pairs beautifully with the soft colors in our master bathroom.
Now our master bathroom has the perfect shelf above the toilet. The room still feels like a relaxing spa, and I can now display a few beautiful bathroom accessories as well.
