As the Seasons Shift, So Does the Art
I’m fortunate to call New Hampshire home. It’s gorgeous throughout the year, but Fall is truly unmatched! The shades of Autumn are absolutely stunning and provide wonderful decorating inspiration.
Autumn introduces a distinctive combination of cozy, natural hues along with a slightly dramatic atmosphere. Bringing this seasonal change into your decor can be as easy as replacing your artwork. Wondering where to begin? Consider these imaginative options:
Print and Frame: Create Your Own Artwork
This is my go-to “instant update” whenever I want to refresh my decor quickly! I just replace a few pieces of art that are already on display. When I’m decorating smaller frames, 8 x 10 and below, I rely on my home printer…which makes everything even more convenient!
Materials Needed:
- High-Quality Printer
- Watercolor Paper Pad or Cardstock
- Frames (or secondhand frames for a vintage feel).
Step 1: Choose Your Artwork
For Autumn, select or design artwork that reflects the dark, seasonal mood. Consider scenery featuring deep, warm shades or abstract creations that express the spirit of Fall.
My home blends thrifted, pre-owned, antique, and contemporary pieces. This combination adds personality without costing a fortune. That’s why I enjoy incorporating a variety of artistic styles when selecting artwork.
This Fall, I decided to place moodier artwork in a handful of frames while storing away my Summer prints.
As an art enthusiast, I enjoy browsing museum websites and discovering public domain pieces in their archives to download and print. Here’s a little secret…many major public museums offer open-source artwork—pieces more than 100 years old—that you can download and print at home!!
The only downside is that finding artwork you truly enjoy requires some time and searching. Luckily, I’ve already done that work for you and gathered a selection that’s ideal for Fall! By the conclusion of this article, you’ll be able to view my personal collection.
Step 2: Print Your Artwork
When I only need a few images, I print them using my home printer. For bigger projects, I recommend visiting a nearby print shop since artwork can consume a considerable amount of printer ink.
You can also adjust the artwork dimensions through your printer’s photo settings before printing. I used the standard 8×10 size for certain images and selected 5×7 for my smaller frames.
One of my favorite at-home printing tips is replacing ordinary printer paper or cardstock with watercolor paper! The textured surface gives the artwork an elevated appearance.
Because most watercolor paper pads measure 9 x 12 inches, you’ll need a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of printer paper as a guide. Use it to mark the size, then cut away the extra paper so it fits inside your printer.
Step 3: Frame Your Artwork
Place your printed pieces in streamlined black frames for a contemporary style, or search thrift shops for antique frames to add a charming rustic touch.
While shopping for frames, be sure to visit nearby thrift stores! You may come across lovely options that coordinate perfectly with your home’s aesthetic.
If finding frames that match your taste proves difficult, you can pick up some affordable ones and transform them yourself. Since I couldn’t locate frames with an aged appearance, I bought black frames from Hobby Lobby and created the look using spray paint & antique wax.
Stores such as Home Goods and Marshalls often carry a great assortment of petite frames. At Home Goods, I found 3 small gold frames with an antiqued finish, perfect for arranging a line of moody Fall artwork beside my entryway table.
Step 4: Showcasing Your Art
I printed several pieces of moody artwork I discovered to bring Fall accents into my living room. I plan to hang some of the pieces while placing others on tabletops.
For a vintage-inspired look in my compact entryway, I arranged the 3 small gold frames from HomeGoods in a row beside the large mirror. I filled them with 2 landscapes and a portrait of a young girl with her dog.
These frames added the final detail to the entryway arrangement I created for Fall.
Remember to place framed artwork on bookcases or hutches for a thoughtfully collected appearance.

Affordable “Antique” Artwork
Supplies Required:
Here’s a smart, inexpensive method for making distressed, vintage-style artwork! Rather than printing the design on watercolor paper, consider using printable burlap sheets.
To make this project as inexpensive as possible, I’ll repurpose a small word art sign...I’m sure you have one of these collecting dust somewhere.
For this frame, I selected a portrait and printed it onto a sheet of printable burlap paper. Next, I measured the interior of the old word art and cut the burlap artwork so it would fit within the frame.
I attached the fresh artwork to the frame with spray adhesive. I’m especially fond of the Gorilla brand because it can be repositioned (since I’ll almost certainly place it crooked on the first attempt!!)
Doesn’t this have such a vintage appearance?? It was incredibly simple to create as well! However, I don’t believe a landscape image would turn out as beautifully as a portrait with this method.
