Easy Paper Horse Corner Bookmark for Kids to make for The Year of the Horse

Well… we have already created a UNICORN Corner Bookmark, but I couldn’t resist transforming it into a “classic” horse corner bookmark for the Year of the Horse (we adore Chinese New Year Craft Ideas), and it is also perfect for Kentucky Derby enthusiasts! Naturally, we love all unicorn crafts, and since they can be so easily adapted into horse crafts… here is how to do it!

Learning Objectives and Educational Opportunities

As with all our crafts, the main goal of these activities is to have some CREATIVE fun. They are intended to provide a little “down time” while complementing lesson plans and seasonal themes throughout the year. As always, students are encouraged to enjoy themselves and explore this craft in whatever creative way they choose.

There are also several more structured learning opportunities:

  • Origami techniques encourage basic maths skills and symmetry
  • Reading and carrying out instructions
  • Developing fine motor skills
  • Enjoyable seasonal activity (Year of the Horse) or complementary farmyard-themed project

Supplies needed to make a Horse Corner Bookmark:

  • Paper in the horse colors of your choice (15x 15cm/ 5.5 x 5.5 inch for the origami base is ideal – along with paper scraps for the horse’s features)
  • Black pen for adding details
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Basic Origami Corner Bookmark

Begin by turning your paper into a square. Corner bookmarks require square pieces of paper, and below we explain how to make one perfectly!

Making a square from rectangular paper for a bookmark corner
  • Start with your A5 sheet of paper and fold one corner across to form a triangle.
  • Trim away the excess, then turn the triangle so its longest edge is along the bottom and the right angle points upward. Check that the triangle’s top is facing up and that the long edge runs perpendicular.
  • Bring the lower right corner upward until it meets the top right-angled corner.
  • Do the same on the left side.
  • Open both of these folds again.
  • Fold one of the upper sheets downward and crease it firmly.

Completing the Origami Bookmark Corner
  • Fold the flaps you made upward again and tuck them INTO your bookmark.
  • Repeat the process on the opposite side.
  • Well done, your basic Origami Corner Bookmark is complete!

How to make a Horse Corner Bookmark

First shape the bookmark into a horse’s head:

Shape the bookmark: Begin by forming the corner bookmark. Turn it over so the complete square/diamond faces you, ensuring the thicker section points upward.

Trim away the bottom quarter (image left) and then form a muzzle and ear (image right).

Next cut your additional horse shapes
