This may not be exactly the White House Easter Egg Roll, but I can promise that your family can have just as much fun as the folks at the White House this Easter (perhaps even more!!). Our Easter Sunday game is imaginative, entertaining, and, of course, wonderfully easy.

Relaxed Family Time at Easter
We absolutely LOVE Easter. To us, Easter means spending time together as a family and enjoying a few small traditions. You don’t need to do a LOT to make Easter enjoyable. We all know how busy Christmas (and Thanksgiving for my Northern American friends) can be, so I prefer to keep Easter Activities for kids straightforward while making sure they remain fun. During spring, we love creating plenty of Spring Crafts for Kids (be sure to visit our dedicated list of Spring Crafts for Preschoolers), but Easter itself is a calm occasion. Sometimes I bake an Easter cake, and sometimes I don’t. We also see Granny and Grandpa at Easter, and the children always enjoy a chocolate egg hunt. Then, last year, we added a new family tradition: The Easter Egg Roll Activity!!
I’m sure many of you are familiar with the Great Egg Roll tradition, although it can differ between countries and communities (*cough* particularly the famous White House Egg Roll!!!). It is generally a COMMUNITY occasion, but we decided to make our own version while keeping everything simple once again.
What I enjoy most is that the WHOLE family can take part, from toddlers right through to Grandpa!! Everyone gets involved, and anybody can win this easy Family Easter Game!
SO… what exactly is it, and how do you play?
To begin – you will need the following for the Egg Roll:
- hard-boiled eggs (we used the brown variety)
- pens
Then, if you have enough time, you can also gather:
- some colorful wool/ pieces of felt/ other decorative supplies
- a hot glue gun (to prevent any waiting, although you can certainly complete the “creative part” the day before with PVA glue)
- Wooden spoons/ rolled-up newspaper ONLY if you don’t live on a hill – then arrange a race across the lawn

The Egg Roll Part 1 – Decorating
Begin by having the whole family transform their hard-boiled eggs into “characters”. You can decorate them in any style you like: doodles, stickers, animals, or, as we chose, funny faces. We made certain that EVERYONE took part – the children, uncle, auntie, granny, and grandpa!
Keep the process as easy or elaborate as you prefer. A hot glue gun makes adding quick and simple hair accessories much easier. You can also print Bunny Ears and Pirate Hats from Picklebums!
You can give prizes for the best-decorated egg & the egg with the best name (ours had names, but I must admit that I forgot to record them…)
And they’re OFF! The Downhill Egg Roll Race is underway.
The Egg Roll Part 2 – “Playing” our Family Easter Game
Okay, having a hill would be ideal for this game. Fortunately, Granny and Grandpa LIVE on a hill. If you don’t have one, don’t worry – we have another option. But first, let’s head to the hill.
The whole family should line up with their eggs. When someone says go, everyone lets their egg roll down the hill.
The Egg Roll Part 2 – Who wins the Egg Rolling Game?

There are two possible Easter Egg Roll Game winners. The first is the egg that travels the farthest (curved paths don’t count; it must reach the greatest distance down the hill). This is fairly simple to judge because it is based on physical distance. However, you could easily cheat by simply throwing your egg as far as possible.
The second way to win is to see which egg stays intact for the longest.
It goes without saying that this is a matter of opinion… and a little disagreement could follow. Therefore, be certain that an impartial judge has been chosen.

Of course, this is only a small “bonus”.. we adore crowning our victorious eggs with miniature paper crowns.

While this certainly isn’t essential, it makes the game more entertaining and creates a wonderful annual Easter photo moment!
