Today, I am thrilled to share a NEW kind of Pop Up Card Idea with you! We are huge admirers of pop up cards, particularly when they are fast and simple to create. This time, I’m showing you these wonderfully easy Heart Pop Up Cards. They are ideal for a Pop Up Mother’s Day Card, Valentine’s Day card or, with a small change of colours, a Teacher Appreciation card.
If you enjoy crafting and making handmade cards, these wonderfully easy Heart Pop-Up Cards are a MUST for someone special this festive season. They are straightforward to create and look fantastic!
We will demonstrate how to form the basic pop-up hearts and attach them inside your card. After that, you can let your imagination take over! For instance, experiment with different colour combinations, use markers for sweet doodles and relaxing decorations, or give the hearts adorable kawaii details. There are countless ways to personalise this uncomplicated heart pop-up card!
This is the ideal Valentine’s Day Card to create! It would also be a charming greeting card for occasions like Christmas or Mother’s Day – no matter who receives it, this card is certain to make them smile!

We adore every one of these heart card designs.. and whichever one you choose to make, each is wonderful. There are so many interpretations of the same pop-up Valentine’s card theme! I also believe that any heart-themed card can make a brilliant Birthday Card!
Easy Heart Pop Up Cards – Supplies required:
You only need a few basic materials.. but, as with all our tutorials, I recommend avoiding needless shopping and using whatever supplies you already have available!
- An A5 Card folded in half to create an A6 blank card (we chose a pink one)
- Some white paper or construction paper – ours measured 21cm long and 6cm high
- Some red paper (enough to cut three medium-sized hearts) – feel free to experiment with different colours! Alternatively, decorate your hearts with markers
- Scraps for extra decoration if desired
- Scissors
- Glue stick
(This project is simple to make, and you will NOT require a cutting mat or craft knife! It is an excellent “safe” classroom craft!).

How to create an easy heart chain Pop-Up Card for Valentines or Mom
I love how quick and effortless these paper heart chain cards are to put together. We also have more beautiful designs planned for you later this year!!! Below, you will find our “usual” How To Video, though you can follow the step-by-step guide if that is your preference.
Pop Up Heart Cards – Step-by-step guide
This 3d heart card tutorial concentrates on the pop-up section of the card-making process. We kept the front of the card very simple – children can attach extra paper hearts there or draw their own hearts if they like!
Creating your pop up hearts
Fold your white paper concertina-style into approximately 3.5cm sections. In other words, alternate between valley folds and mountain folds. The creases should be very neat, with every edge matching up precisely. You will need 6 folds in total!
Sketch half a heart – ensure the “outside” of the heart is positioned on the side that “opens out” and that it reaches all the way to the edge. You need a straight section there so the hearts remain joined, rather like a Paper Doll Chain. The heart’s centre should sit on the folded side. If this feels easier, we also have heart card templates available on teachers pay teachers!
Cut around the hearts. Once you unfold the paper, you should see 3 hearts linked together.
Decorating the hearts
Now it is time to decorate! We used the white hearts as a stencil, then cut a second, slightly smaller heart from red paper. You could also adorn the hearts with pens, attach photographs or add anything else you fancy.
For ours, we glued 3 red hearts in the centre of the white ones, taking care that the “centre” of each heart “folds inward” rather than outward.
Putting together your pop up heart card
Apply glue to the backs of the two “outside heart” HALVES, then carefully attach them to your cardstock!
Adding the final details to your 3d heart card
Now you can add whichever embellishments you like. I chose to cut out some extra paper hearts, but stickers, glitter glue and shaped hole punches are great options too. Use hearts, balloons, flowers or anything else that inspires you!
Congratulations! Your card is complete. Add more paper hearts, Valentine’s confetti or a sweet message for Mom!! A personalised note is always the perfect finishing detail. Then place the card in an envelope and brighten someone’s day.
