Bandanas remain a popular warm-weather trend, particularly around 4th of July. Red, white, and blue styles appear to be sold out at all of my nearby craft stores!
After some searching, I found a few and created these cheerful red, white, and blue bandana headbands, which make a wonderful 4th of July craft.
These DIY hair decorations are incredibly simple to create, requiring only fabric bandanas and elastic, along with a few basic items you likely already have.
Make them with a sewing machine or use hot glue for a no-sew design. They’re enjoyable for older children and adults as well. Simple, adorable, and perfectly timed for 4th of July. Here’s how to make them:
Create a Bandana Headband

- 3 Bandana(s) red, white, and blue, one of each
- Elastic ribbon 1/2 inch wide
- Sewing thread

Use scissors and a ruler to cut a 3-inch-wide strip from every bandana. If you own a rotary cutter, this step becomes especially simple.

You will have three strips for one headband. Bend one end of each strip into a “W” shape.

Gather the strips into a stack, position one end of the elastic at the center, and sew through that end.

Braid the fabric until the headband reaches the proper length for the head. Cut the elastic with scissors.

Attach the cut elastic end to the opposite side of the headband by sewing or gluing it as before.
Holding the pieces was easiest for me; pinning them would have taken extra time! Perhaps I’m simply impatient. In any case, use pins whenever necessary.
Here’s the best feature for anyone wanting a no-sew method. Use a hot glue gun and glue sticks to attach everything, working one layer at a time.
Step 4: Loosen the braid for a wider/thicker headband, or tighten it for a narrower/slimmer one. I loosely wrapped the elastic around the back of a chair to stabilize the pieces while braiding.
