We are having such a wonderful time with Paper Weaving right now.. and very soon we will have a fantastic collection of Easter Weaving Projects for you to explore and enjoy. Paper weaving is both enjoyable AND beautiful. It is also an excellent activity for developing fine motor abilities and recognizing patterns in nursery, preschool and foundation years – you might even like to use it as a KS 1 Easter Activity. The first project in our Easter Weaving printable series is a very easy, but hopefully adorable, Easter Egg & Chick Paper Weaving Printable!
The inspiration came fromMy Kid Craft (be sure to visit for detailed photo instructions). As she did not offer a quick, easy-to-use printable, I decided to create a free version for use at home or in the classroom. We absolutely love paper Easter crafts! I also developed her idea further and made some Woven Egg & Chick Cards.. and coming soon will be some delightful Bunny Weaving and Woven Bunny Cards!!! Paper Weaving Chick Eggs
Today I have prepared two Easter Printables for preschool children – the Egg & Chick Paper Weaving activity AND a “plain” design that you can COLOUR AND DECORATE. The plain template would also work wonderfully for mixed media collages. If you try the printable and make some collages.. PLEASE send me photographs! I would be thrilled to see your work (and your children’s)!!!

- Lightweight cardstock for your printer. Regular paper will work, though light card is preferable. Alternatively, print on paper and attach it to card afterward (such as recycled card from a cereal box). I also think printing the chick & eggs on coloured card would be delightful. It makes the project look especially bright and cheerful.

How To Paper Weave Easter Chicks
I have “borrowed” the pictures from Chick in Egg Card, which is created in nearly the same manner (you only need to cut a little extra!) so I hope that is alright!
When printing your Woven Easter Egg & Chick art onto white card, I suggest colouring the chick BEFORE cutting it out. This prevents mess on the table and allows children to paint or colour beyond the edges with less “messiness”…. Colouring your free Easter Chick template
We really enjoy how simple these Chick cards are to create and how beautiful the paper weaving appears! They make perfect Easter Egg patterns!
First, print your free Easter Printable onto lightweight cardstock.
Decorate your chick using any colours you prefer! If you are working with watercolour pencils as we did.. allow the chick to dry completely before continuing.
Cutting out your Easter Egg Card
After everything has dried, fold the sheet along the line where the two eggs join. Making the fold as precise as possible (so the top and bottom of the page line up) means you can cut both sections together!
Cut around the card using the “full egg.”
Unfold the card, then trim away the “top half” of the egg & chick side.
Trim along the marked lines on your egg & chick card.
Next, cut coloured paper into 1cm strips. I am not especially good at making perfectly tidy strips… and I still think the finished cards look lovely. That said, the more even the strips are, the better the result. If you are preparing this as a KS1 classroom activity, you might want to cut them beforehand with a paper trimmer!
Creating your Woven Egg Cards
Begin at the upper-left side of the egg. Put a small dab of glue on your strip and attach it beneath the first strip. Then weave it over and under. Add a little more glue at the opposite end to hold it in place (you can cut away the excess afterward).
For the second row, glue the strip ON TOP of the previous strip before weaving.
Keep going until you reach the base of the egg. I find that gluing each section of the final strip helps hold everything securely and “tidies” the finished egg.

These sweet Easter Egg Paper Weaving Cards are smaller than the larger chick design, making them a good choice for slightly older children – perhaps a brownie troup or a KS1 class. They are also useful for writing practice!
