Slime ranks among our favorite science projects, and whenever possible, we enjoy giving it a festive holiday twist! This fluffy pumpkin slime makes an excellent Fall and Halloween science experiment for children. We’ll also demonstrate how to transform your slime into a jack-o-lantern pumpkin! Kids will have a wonderful time playing with this soft, fluffy slime during Halloween. It would also be a great choice for a Halloween celebration or sensory activity.

We appreciate how easy fluffy slime is to prepare! Our formula is designed to be somewhat stretchier than many other fluffy slime recipes you might find. Adding water helps create that texture. For a less stretchy result, simply leave out the water. During the initial mixing, the slime will feel quite sticky—and that is completely normal! It needs plenty of kneading before reaching a smoother, less sticky consistency. If it remains tacky, you can add a small amount of contact solution, but we suggest kneading it longer first so the slime does not become too firm.
Remember, too, that all fluffy slime gradually loses its “fluffiness” after one day. It remains perfectly usable the following day, although it will no longer have the same fluffy texture.
What is Fluffy Pumpkin Slime?
Fluffy slime is ordinary slime prepared with shaving cream. Adding more shaving cream makes the mixture fluffier. For this project, we suggest using only 2 cups so it can be shaped into a jack-o-lantern. Too much shaving cream will make forming the pumpkin shape more difficult.
To help ensure your slime turns out properly, read the directions closely. Choosing the correct contact lens solution and glue is very important! Replacing these ingredients with different brands could cause the slime to fail. We also recommend sticking with the brands listed in the recipe.

After preparing your fluffy slime, enjoy pulling and pressing it. Compared with regular slime, fluffy slime is somewhat more difficult to stretch. Its main purpose is to provide a satisfying sensory experience through squeezing and squishing.
How Long Does This Slime Last?
The shaving cream will gradually collapse, so by the next day your slime will not be as “fluffy”. It will still be suitable for storing and playing with. After the first day, the texture will become more similar to traditional slime. Keep it in an airtight container or resealable bag, and it should remain usable for at least 1 week.
The Science Behind Slime
Slime belongs to a group of materials called polymers. Jell-O, chewing gum and rubber bands are additional examples of polymers. Glue is another polymer. A polymer consists of lengthy chains of polyvinyl acetate molecules. Because these chains can move past one another with ease, the material is able to pour.
Although children enjoy making slime, the science behind it is fascinating too! Talk through the process with your kids as you combine the contact lens solution and glue. Once the contact solution is mixed into the glue, it reacts with the glue and creates a thick, viscous material. That mixture becomes slime, which can then be molded and stretched. Slime develops when the glue molecules bond with the borate ions in the contact lens solution. This connection prevents the large molecules from sliding freely past each other as they did in the original glue. The result is slime!
Pumpkin Slime Ingredients
- 2/3 Cup of Elmer’s White Glue – we prefer purchasing this gallon size of white glue because it offers good value.
Note: this recipe was prepared with Elmer’s white glue. Avoid replacing it with another glue because its composition may differ, causing the recipe to fail
- 1/2 TeaspoonBaking Soda
- Liquid Food Coloring – this set includes a bright orange shade
- 2 Cups Shaving Cream – Note: avoid using shave gel.
- 2 TablespoonsContact Lens Solution –*Important: the contact lens solution you choose must list boric acid and sodium borate among its ingredients. These components react with the glue and create the slime. We suggest using Renu fresh orEquate brand. Avoid replacing it with another brand.

Creating Pumpkin Slime
1. Pour the white glue into a bowl. Add the baking soda, then stir everything together.
2. Pour in the water and stir to combine.
3. Mix in the orange food coloring. We suggest using a gel coloring such as this set, since it provides a brighter shade and needs less coloring.
4. Stir in the shaving cream. The color might become considerably paler, so add extra food coloring if you prefer a stronger orange shade.
5. Gradually pour in the contact solution.
**Important: the contact lens solution you choose must list boric acid and sodium borate among its ingredients. These substances react with the glue and create the slime. If slime does not form, the solution generally does not contain these ingredients. Review the label and refer to the suggested brands above in the ingredient list.
Add 1 tablespoon first and stir it in. Follow with the second tablespoon and keep mixing. When the slime begins pulling away from the bowl, remove it and knead it for 10 minutes. It will be extremely sticky during kneading, which is completely normal!
Note- making fluffy slime can be MESSY. During kneading, it is expected to cling to your hands. Continue kneading for a minimum of 10 minutes. Allowing the slime to “rest” on the table for around 5 minutes before playing can also be helpful.
If the mixture remains excessively sticky after kneading, apply a little baby oil or lotion to your hands. You may also add additional contact solution, but only use 1 teaspoon at a time. Too much can cause the slime to become firm.
6. Now shape your pumpkin! Mold the slime into a pumpkin form. Cut eyes, a nose and a mouth from black foam paper. Use green foam paper to attach a stem on top. Children can enjoy changing the jack-o-lantern’s expressions by cutting out different eye, nose and mouth designs.
Your pumpkin slime is ready for playtime! When stored correctly, it should remain usable for at least a week (refer to the storage information above in the post).
Slime Safety & Precautions
Note: Since slime-making is a science experiment, take appropriate safety measures while preparing it.
- Adults should prepare the slime and manage all products.
- Read and obey the instructions on every product label.
- Wash your hands both before and after handling the slime.
- Stop using the slime immediately if skin irritation appears. Those with sensitive skin should wear gloves while making or playing with it.
