Regardless of the time of year, handprint crafts are always a wonderful choice. They’re incredibly adorable and charming, making lovely keepsakes. This Paper Bag Handprint Walrus Craft, for instance, is an especially sweet project that can warm even the coldest winter heart.
Our handprint walrus is not only adorable and a wonderful keepsake project, but also incredibly simple to create. It’s as easy as pie, which happens to make some of my favorite crafts. If a project can be completed from beginning to end in under an hour, I consider it a definite success. After all, distractions can happen quite easily.
One of the many things I enjoy about crafting with my children is discovering more about the topics behind each project. We had a lengthy conversation about walruses, why they prefer chilly environments, and how they manage to survive in those conditions. It’s an engaging and fascinating way to learn without even noticing that you’re doing it.
Winter Paper Bag Walrus Handprint Keepsake Craft
To create our handprint walrus, gather brown paper lunch bags, brown, tan, red, and white cardstock, medium-sized googly eyes, 1” and 1.5” circular paper punches, scissors, and a glue stick.
Supplies for the Paper Bag Walrus Craft
- Paper lunch bags
- Cardstock – brown, tan, red, and white
- Circular paper punches – 1.5” and 1”
- Medium-sized googly eyes
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Step-by-Step Handprint Walrus Craft Instructions
Start with one brown paper lunch bag.
Slice the bag’s body in half.
Next, trace hand shapes onto brown cardstock. Each walrus requires two handprints.
Carefully cut out each handprint.
Attach the handprints to both sides near the lower portion of the paper bag’s front.
Place the googly eyes onto the bag flap.
Next, punch 2 circles from tan cardstock with the 1.5” circle punch. Then use the 1” punch to create a nose. We made some noses pink and others red.
Secure the two tan circles along the flap’s fold, allowing them to overlap a little.
Position the nose immediately above the center point of the two tan circles.
After that, cut two strips with pointed ends from white paper or cardstock to create the tusks.
To complete this adorable winter handprint keepsake, glue the tusks beneath the bag flap.

Instructions
- Start with a brown paper lunch bag, then cut its body in half.
- Trace hand shapes onto brown cardstock, making two handprints for every walrus.
- Cut the traced handprints out.
- Glue the handprints onto both sides near the bottom of the paper bag’s front.
- Attach the googly eyes to the bag flap.
- Use the 1.5” circle punch to cut 2 circles from tan cardstock.
- Punch a nose from cardstock with the 1” circle punch. We used both pink and red noses.
- Glue the tan circles along the bag flap’s fold, with a slight overlap.
- Place the nose right above the center of the two tan circles.
- Cut two pointed strips from white paper or cardstock to serve as tusks.
- Finish the cute winter keepsake by gluing the tusks beneath the bag flap.
