Hello, everyone! I’m Jeanette from Craft Whack, where I share all kinds of children’s art activities and kid-friendly designs. My family and I live near Chicago, and I enjoy developing simple projects that encourage kids to be creative each day.
We absolutely love paper crafts here, and I had been hoping to experiment with a simple quilling activity for a while. This project is very basic, so children who enjoy it might like to discover more advanced quilling methods. I came across some fantastic videos on You Tube.
Either way, this activity helps introduce your children to—or strengthen—the concept of using paper as a three-dimensional material rather than leaving it completely flat. That poor paper was ready for a transformation…

Along with the written instructions below, we’ve also included this short heart-making video!
Supplies required for these paper quilled cards:
- Colored Card Stock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Something to wrap the paper around (we chose a small paintbrush handle. A pencil was too wide and left the centers of the paper spirals too loose.)
Instructions for making Paper Quilled Heart Cards
Begin by cutting narrow strips from colored card stock. We chose white, pale pink, and red. Each strip measured about 14 x 1 cm. Older children may use a craft knife for cutting, although scissors worked very well for us—the strips do not have to be completely uniform.
Wrap the strips individually and tightly around the paintbrush handle. Once removed, they will retain their coiled shape.
Take one whole sheet of colored card stock and fold it in half to create the card. With 2 strips of card stock, shape a heart and attach the strips to the card’s front. We spread glue along each strip’s edge and pressed it down for roughly a minute per strip. Afterward, I set a light box on top of the heart to hold it flat while it dried for about 1/2 hour.
Here comes the enjoyable step! Dip every coil into a small pool of glue, then arrange it inside the heart. We selected 3 colors, but you can try using as many or as few shades as you like.
