It’s fun that every wooden spoon can have its own character. Choose between a pumpkin, witch, Frankenstein, or vampire. Using only a few materials, you can turn old spoons into amusing characters before Halloween arrives!
Supplies Needed
- Wooden Spoons – we chose these wooden spoons.
- Small googly eyes
- Sharpie
- Acrylic Paint – we selected orange, lime green, purple, black, and this color for the vampire’s face
- Felt – we selected green, orange, white, and black
- Burlap Ribbon– a small amount of burlap ribbon was used on top of the pumpkin spoon, though brown felt would work as well
- Glitter Foam Sheets – gold for the witch and red for the vampire
- Buttons – tiny purple and black buttons

How to Make Halloween Wooden Spoons
Begin by painting each wooden spoon:
- Cover the entire spoon in orange paint for the pumpkin
- Apply green paint to the witch’s top and black paint to the handle
- Color the Frankenstein’s top green and the handle purple
- Paint the vampire’s top beige (or this color) and its bottom black

Below are the step-by-step directions for the 4 wooden spoon characters:
Pumpkin:

1. Trim the eyes, nose, and mouth from black felt, then attach them with glue.
2. Shape a stem from brown felt or burlap ribbon and adhere it to the upper back of the spoon.
3. Make a leaf from green felt and glue it next to the stem.
Frankenstein:

1. Cut out the eyebrowsand mouth using black felt, then secure them with glue.
2. Trim the hair from black felt and attach it to the spoon’s top with glue. For the rounded shape, trace around the spoon’s upper portion, then cut the edge into zigzag points.

3. Place the googly eyes above the eyebrows.
4. Attach 2 black buttons to the handle with glue.
Witch:

1. Shape a hat from black felt and adhere it to the top of the spoon.
2. Use a strip of gold glitter foam paper to create the hat’s brim.

3. For the hair, cut strips from orange felt and glue them along the spoon’s sides. You might need to angle the tops of the strips so they fit neatly beneath the hat.

4. Attach 2 googly eyes, then draw the nose and mouth using a black sharpie.
5. Secure 2 purple buttons to the handle.
Vampire:

1. Cut the hair from black felt and glue it onto the top. As you cut the hair, form a peak that reaches down near the area where the eyes will go. Trace around the spoon’s top for the rounded outline, then shape the peak while cutting.
2. Cut a triangular piece from the red glitter foam sheet and attach it to the spoon’s back.
3. Shape a slim triangle from white felt and glue it onto the handle’s top.

4. Cut a bow shape from the red glitter foam sheet and attach it over the white felt.

5. Attach 2 googly eyes.

6. Use a black sharpie to sketch the mouth.
7. Add 2 tiny white felt triangles to serve as the teeth.
We hope creating these Halloween spoons is enjoyable! Use them during story time, as puppets, or display them in a mason jar as décor!
