Read Across America Day is coming up soon on March 2nd, which is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday. That makes it the ideal time to choose a beloved Dr. Seuss story, such as Red Fish Blue Fish, and create our Handprint Red Fish Blue Fish Craft alongside it!
These handprint red fish blue fish are not only simple and adorable to make, but they also feature your little one’s handprints for an especially heartwarming detail. Handprint fish are surprisingly cute. Best of all, this project gives you the perfect reason to gather together and enjoy a wonderful book.
Red Fish Blue Fish Handprint Craft
For this Red Fish Blue Fish Handprint Craft, gather a paper plate, blue acrylic paint, cardstock in red, blue, green, and yellow, small googly eyes, a white marker, scissors, and glue.
Dr Seuss Red Fish Blue Fish Craft Step by Step Directions
Start with a paper plate and blue paint. We selected a pale blue shade so our blue fish would stand out.
Cover the paper plate with paint, then allow it to dry fully.
As the paint dries, trace your little one’s hand. Make one red, one blue, and one yellow handprint, along with two handprints on the green cardstock.
Carefully cut out each handprint.
Add googly eyes to transform the handprints into fish. Next, use the white paint pen or marker to create a tiny circular mouth beneath the eye. Add a few wavy, fin-like accents along the fish’s side as well.
Do the same for every fish.
Once the paint has dried completely, trim away the top portion of the paper plate.
We chose not to attach our fish inside the bowl, allowing each one to move in and out while we read the book.

Notes
We chose not to attach our fish to the plate, allowing each color to swim in and out alongside the book, but you can secure them if you prefer.
