Glitter Slime Recipe
We’re slightly obsessed with sparkly slime. We’ve created glittery unicorn slime, mermaid slime, fairy slime and princess slime. Incorporating glitter and color into slime is a delightful way to transform it into themed slime for a birthday celebration!
For homemade glitter slime, gather clear glue, glitter (we prefer chunky or standard glitter; fine glitter will not be noticeable), contact lens solution, baking soda and water. The complete recipe is provided below.
Select any colors you enjoy for this slime. It would be wonderful for a birthday celebration, an afternoon project or simply for the slime enthusiast at home.
Biodegradable Glitter – For a biodegradable glitter choice, we suggest thischunky biodegradable glitter instead. Keep in mind that this glitter begins decomposing after several weeks when it comes into contact with liquid.

What is Slime?
Slime belongs to a group of materials called polymers. Jell-O, gum and rubber bands are additional examples of polymers. White glue is another polymer. A polymer consists of extended chains of polyvinyl acetate molecules. Because these chains move past one another easily, the material remains glue-like and pours smoothly.
The Science Behind Slime
Once contact lens solution is mixed into the glue, it reacts with the glue and creates a thick, stretchy slime that can be molded and pulled. The slime develops as the glue molecules connect with the borate ions. This creates bonds that prevent the large molecules from sliding freely against each other, unlike when the material was still glue. That process produces the slime!
Will This Slime Recipe Work?
Each of our slime recipes is simple to prepare and should work when the directions are followed carefully. Avoid replacing the recommended brands, since the slime might not form correctly. The type of contact lens solution we use is very important – it is the ingredient that changes glue into slime. We consistently suggest Elmer’s glue because it is dependable and produces excellent slime. If Elmer’s glue is unavailable in your country, replace it with another high-quality PVA glue.

How Long Will the Slime Last?
When stored correctly, this slime should remain usable for at least one week. In most cases, it lasts considerably longer. Keep it inside an airtight container or bag. We prefer a resealable bag because it allows us to squeeze out all the air.
Ingredients for Making Glitter Slime
- Elmer’s Clear Glue (6 oz) Note: We have tested this recipe only with Elmer’s glue and suggest this brand because other brands might not work.
TIP: For better savings, we prefer purchasing thegallon size of clear glue. Another option is to use Elmer’s glitter glue and mix additional glitter into it.
- Glitter – standard-size glitter works best for us because fine glitter does not stand out in the slime. We used pink, turquoise and purple.
- Liquid Food Coloring –this collection includes a wide range of bright pink, purple, and blue shades.
- 1.5 tablespoons of contact lens solution.**Important:the contact lens solution you choose must include boric acid and sodium borate. Our favorite is this brand and we use it for each of our slime formulas. Check our complete contact solution slime recipe to see which brands we suggest. Avoid replacing it with another brand.
Making Glitter Slime
1. Choose a bowl in which to combine your slime ingredients.
2. Pour 6 oz of clear glue into the bowl.
3. Mix in your food coloring.
We chose pink, blue, and purple.This collection offers many vivid pink, purple, and blue colors.
4. Stir 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into the bowl.
5. Next, pour in 1/4 cup of water and combine.
TIP: Stir slowly as you prepare the slime to keep the clear glue from creating excessive air bubbles and becoming cloudy.
6. Add your glitter next.
7. Pour in the contact lens solution.
Gradually add the contact lens solution until the mixture begins separating from the bowl. Start with one tablespoon, then stir. Work slowly to avoid overmixing and creating excess bubbles.
When the slime begins pulling away from the bowl, remove it and knead it by hand. It will be sticky at first, which is completely normal. Continue kneading for 5 minutes; the longer you knead, the less sticky it should become.
Reminder: the contact lens solution must contain boric acid and sodium borate for the slime to form.
How to Fix Sticky Slime
If the slime remains too sticky after 5 minutes of kneading, first try applying a little baby oil or lotion to your hands. This helps prevent over-activating the slime.
If you have followed all the suggestions above and the slime continues to be too sticky, add another 1/2 tablespoon of contact lens solution. Introduce it gradually, one extra teaspoon at a time, and keep kneading until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Storing Glitter Slime
Keep the slime in an airtight container or bag, and it should remain usable for at least one week.
