Now that winter has arrived, we discovered that our mudroom entrance needed extra storage! Our family of four has only a small entryway. It was once a very narrow coat closet, but I transformed it into a charming little entryway mudroom with hooks and storage bins. It works wonderfully during three of the four seasons.
However, once winter comes around, it is no longer sufficient!
Boot piles often wander out of the closet and spread into the walkways. The snow pants and winter jackets occupy several hooks, leaving insufficient space for everything.
I was tired of overloaded hooks and heaps of snow gear scattered across the floor. Our mudroom needed additional storage!
Because we have a small alcove beside the sliding door leading to the backyard, where the kids put on their snow gear, I decided to turn that area into extra storage.
Still, I wanted the new mudroom shelves to be easy to put away once the snow disappeared. I envisioned something that could fold up and be stored in the garage until it was needed again. So I began working to turn my concept into reality!
Various Ways to Use the Collapsible Storage Shelves
My design is excellent for creating extra room for seasonal belongings. The upper rack offers plenty of space for the entire family’s hats and gloves, while the slatted shelf allows items to dry faster.
The lower shelf is an ideal spot for keeping boots. Its generous depth accommodates boots of any size. I also installed a drip tray beneath it to collect melting snow and shield the floors.
The hooks are my favorite feature, though! There is lots of space to hang the children’s wet snow pants and coats, so they do not overwhelm the entryway closet. Thanks to all that additional room, everything dries more easily! Cheers to dry gear!
Once I assembled the collapsible storage shelves and filled them with boots and gloves, I discovered that these clever shelves could be useful in other seasons as well!
Summer
How great would these collapsible storage shelves be beside a pool during the summer? The hooks are idealfor towels, while the upper shelf is ideal for goggles and a speaker to enjoy some summer music!
Spring
Alternatively, place it beside the garden during spring. Use the hooks to hang your gardening apron and tools. Keep gardening gloves, seeds, and fertilizers on the upper shelf, while the lower shelf works wonderfully for muddy footwear and a kneeling cushion.
But I’m getting off track. It has been so chilly that I can’t stop thinking about warmer weather…
At least the final weeks of winter will be more manageable with a dedicated spot for the kids’ extra cold-weather equipment. Plus, the slatted shelves provide excellent ventilation, helping everything dry properly after a snowy day.
How to Build Collapsible Storage Shelves
A major advantage of these foldable storage shelves for creating additional mudroom space is their low cost! I built them using affordable furring strips and standard boards for under $20!
Nowadays, you can’t even purchase two storage containers for that price!
With the help of the Kreg pocket hole jig and the Kreg shelf pin jig, the storage shelves came together in just one afternoon. These two straightforward tools are favorites of mine because they simplify the building process.
To help your new mudroom shelves remain sturdy for many years, shield the wood with two layers of paint or polyurethane sealer. If you intend to keep them outdoors through various seasons, choose exterior paint or sealer and blue kote pocket hole screws.
