Creative Ideas for Displaying Flowers & Plants at Home
I adore decorating my home with flowers and plants, and I also have fun thinking of original ways to showcase them. Because I’m constantly browsing thrift shops and exploring vintage markets for distinctive finds, I frequently repurpose thrifted or antique pieces as planters and vessels.
I’ve collected suggestions for every season as well as ideas you can use throughout the year!
Perfect for Any Season
Below are some of the creative containers I’ve used to showcase plants around my home. A little greenery can have a remarkable effect on a room, adding energy and bringing the space to life.
I turned this vintage metal vessel into a kind of topiary using a leafy ivy plant. The ivy naturally curled around the metal, creating such a lovely effect!
This double-decalitre wooden container is among my favorite vintage discoveries! I even found it discounted at my neighborhood antique shop last year.
I decided to fill it with several faux fern fronds. They’re such beautiful stems, and I picked them up during a trip to Magnolia in Waco last year.
This brass planter began as a thrift-store makeover! Originally, it was an inexpensive silver container that looked rather plain, but I transformed it into a Magnolia Inspired Brass Planter.
Thrift shops are my favorite destination for discovering distinctive containers for my indoor plants.
After years of thrift shopping and visiting vintage markets, I’ve gathered quite a collection of unusual pieces…sometimes I choose something simply because I adore its appearance, even though I honestly have no clue how I’ll use it!!
That happened with this aged wooden recipe box (at least, I believe it’s a recipe box!). It remained in my decor storage for years before I repurposed it to hold a houseplant.
If you’re using a wooden item as a plant container, placing a saucer beneath the plant is wise to protect the wood from moisture damage.
Springtime Flower Inspiration
By the time February arrives, I’m completely ready for winter to end! My winter blues are obvious in the way I begin decorating my home with Spring flowers…I simply can’t resist!! I rarely leave the grocery store without picking up tulips or dafs, and Trader Joe’s is impossible to visit without bringing home some of their gorgeous flowers and plants!
A cheerful idea is to purchase a pot of tulip bulbs, which many grocery and big box stores begin carrying in early Spring (my tulips came from Walmart’s Valentine’s Day section). Rather than placing them outside on your porch, transfer them into a beautiful vessel so you can appreciate them indoors.
While arranging a Cottage Style Easter Table, I placed potted Spring flowers in a white-footed pedestal bowl to form a centerpiece. As an added bonus, I later planted the hyacinth bulbs in my garden.
One inventive way I made space for a petite cluster of pansies was to separate a single cell from the nursery six-pack and place it directly into a vintage-style metal hanging pocket.
Whenever they needed watering, I just removed the pot and watered the pansies in the sink.
Whenever I browse thrift stores, I regularly spot vintage creamers in the dinnerware section. This vibrant Irish porcelain creamer for $2.99 was impossible to leave behind. Since creamers are ideally sized for small plants, placing one beside the kitchen sink is a lovely option.
Each Spring, before the Forsythia blooms, I head outdoors to snip some branches and bring them inside to flower. They can remain fresh for several weeks….and best of all, this is a cost-free way to bring flowers into your home!!
Summer Ideas For Plants
For me, Summer is the simplest season in which to keep my houseplants alive!!!! The cheerful morning light streaming through my kitchen and living room windows keeps them all thriving.
To bring greenery to my living room coffee table, I clipped a piece from my Monstera and placed it in a water-filled vase.
The vase now sits in my bathroom, and the leaves continue to develop in nothing but water!
I also enjoy placing houseplants in charming planters on my bookshelves. Their greenery brings in extra color and dimension. Just be careful not to position the plant so far back that it cannot receive sunlight. A faux plant would work well in a dimmer area too.
Even without a green thumb, you can still bring a little greenery into your home! This Anthropologie Dupe Moss Wreath can be completed in only a few minutes and looks absolutely lovely. No crafting experience is required…I promise it is incredibly easy to create!!!
For an effortless way to bring greenery into a room, place a vase filled with a few faux fern stems or other foliage on an entryway table. You will not have to worry about watering while you are away on Summer vacation!!

For my bigger floor plants, I especially enjoy placing them inside a lovely basket! It adds extra texture to the room, and I cannot resist the green and brown color pairing!
Fall Ideas
For a more understated Fall decorating style, I placed a large vase (another thrift store DIY project)with a blend of cream and brown autumn blooms and dried pods.
In my kitchen, a vintage wall basket hangs beside my dining table. It’s an ideal place to bring in a touch of seasonal color.
This authentic bean pot was another fantastic thrift store find. It cost less than $10, and as soon as I noticed the “3” stamp (along with the bargain price), I placed it in my cart! Since it sells for considerably more on eBay, I felt as though I was getting away with something.
Vintage pots and jugs bring personality to your home, but be careful not to spend too much on them! I’ve come across some unbelievable prices at antique & vintage markets.
Fall is an excellent season to step into your garden and collect a few late-season blooms and dried stems. For this arrangement, I gathered assorted flowers from the garden and placed them in a wicker basket…so simple and incredibly pretty! You can view the rest of my Fall-decorated potting bench here.
I also brought some dried flowers from my garden into the kitchen with this bright arrangement, which I created on a pedestal for Fall and placed on my china cabinet.
Filled with dried wheat, a tall copper flower-market container offers a fast way to bring seasonal color into your space.
Winter Inspiration
During winter, I placed greenery and branches in that same copper container in my living room to create a natural seasonal appearance.
Last Christmas, I reused the copper-toned vase from Fall and filled it with fresh magnolia cuttings from Trader Joe’s since they don’t grow up here! The arrangement stayed fresh for well over a month before the leaves began to dry.
That wall pocket really does suit every season! For the holidays, I arranged wintery red berry stems, pine cones, and evergreen branches inside it.
