How to make a St Patrick Gnome
Materials you’ll need
- Unused Mop: The mop fibers create an ideal fluffy beard for your gnome. For the best outcome, choose a fresh, clean mop! Screw-on varieties work especially well. As another option, you can create a similar piece at home by making a “large tassle” from yarn or string! However, make sure you read the complete article here before getting started!
- Green Sock: A bright green sock forms the gnome’s body and hat base. Striped or patterned socks can provide additional character, although remember that the patterns will appear “upside down” once turned into a hat. Shades such as orange, black, or white are also suitable for a St. Patrick’s Day design.
- Batting Scraps or white felt: Ideal for making a shamrock to adorn the gnome’s hat.
- Poly-fill (Optional): Add poly-fill inside the hat to give it a fuller or gently slouched look. You may also leave it out so the hat naturally drapes to one side. Reused materials, including old cushion filling, cut-up socks or fabric, and leftover yarn, can work as well.

- Embroidery Floss or Twine: Useful for fastening the sock’s top and holding all the components securely together.
- Rice: Adds stability and weight, helping the gnome remain upright on any surface. I used approximately 4 cups of rice for a small gnome. For a medium gnome, use 1–2 additional cups. When making a larger version, choose a bigger sock and increase the rice accordingly.
Equipment
You will also require the following items to make your St. Patrick’s Day Gnome:
- Scissors – Use these to cut the sock, mop fibers, and batting pieces.
- Hot glue gun & hot glue sticks – Helpful for joining the parts and keeping every piece firmly attached.
- Large recipient/bowl – This keeps the sock standing upright and steady while you add the rice.
- Shamrock template (please DO NOT tip just enter $0 at check out) – Use it to make a delightful shamrock decoration for the gnome’s hat.
Instructions to make a no sew gnome for St Patrick’s Day
Prepare the sock: Snip the green sock at the heel to divide it into two sections. Keep the upper portion for making the hat later.
Trim the mop strands: Remove around half of the strands from the mop, setting a small number aside to make a pom-pom for the hat.
Build the base: Put the bottom part of the sock inside a large bowl or container, and pour in the rice. Keep roughly an inch unfilled at the top so it can be tied closed.
Close the base: Firmly fasten the sock’s opening with twine or embroidery floss so the rice remains contained.
Create the beard: Hot-glue the shortened mop strands onto the upper part of the sock to make the gnome’s beard. After the adhesive has set, separate and fluff the strands to achieve a fuller appearance. Cut them down further if necessary to reach the desired length.
Attach the nose: Apply hot glue to fasten the nose securelythe wooden bead securely in position, nestled between the mop strands to serve as the gnome’s nose.
Create the hat: Turn the upper part of the sock inside out, place the reserved mop strands inside to make a pom-pom, and fasten the top firmly. Turn the sock right side out once more, separate the strands, and fluff them.
For extra structure, you can stuff the hat with polyfill if you like.
Attach the shamrock: Transfer the shamrock template onto leftover batting or white felt, cut out the shape, and adhere it to the front of the hat to add a festive accent.
Put together the gnome: Place the embellished sock hat over the gnome’s head and adjust it until it fits just right. Secure the hat with glue if necessary.
