Our contributor Jennifer explains how to create it! We simply adore every kind of Paper Plate Craft!! How to create a Paper Plate Twirler
Do you refer to these as Star Twirlers or Star Whirligigs? Personally, I feel Paper Plate Star Whirligigs sounds a little more playful – but whichever name you choose, I think they’re enchanting! There’s something incredibly mesmerizing about seeing these curly spirals rotate in the breeze. They’re lovely to look at and wonderfully easy to make!
Earlier this year, we created a Rainbow Whirligigwhich is still going beautifully, spinning and bringing energy to the room whenever a puff of air reaches it. I thought it would be enjoyable to make a contrasting whirligig, using deeper shades and a touch of mystery for balance. We chose a Star Whirligig because it has a classic appeal (meaning you won’t have to remove it once a holiday has ended). You might also name it a Galaxy Whirligig or a Shooting Star Whirligig. It’s an excellent project for a space-inspired room, and you could even include a few planets in the pattern if you wish.
This project involves a fair amount of drying time, although the hands-on work is quick. It’s an ideal craft to revisit for a few minutes at a time – perfect for taking a short creative break between homework tasks or chores.
How to Create a Star Whirligig
Prepare the adorable kawaii stars first
Print the star templates – when printing onto yellow paper, you can continue straight to the next stage. If you print them on white paper, paint or color the stars yellow or gold, then leave them to dry before moving on.
Give the stars Kawaii faces or other sweet decorations, then cut them out. Put them to one side.
Paint your Paper Plate Blue
Cover both sides of the paper plate so it resembles a galaxy, blending the blue, purple and black paints together.
I added glitter paint for a “starry effect,” though sprinkling or flicking on white paint would work nicely too.
Trim the paper plate into a spiral
Once the paint has dried fully, cut the paper plate into one wide spiral, as shown.
Stick the adorable stars along the Whirligig and allow the glue to dry.
Make a small hole at the top of the spiral, pass the twine or string through it, and secure it with a knot.
Hang the Star Whirligig wherever you prefer and watch it sway in the breeze.
