Watermelon Craft for Kids
A free printable watermelon pattern is available for this project! You may also follow the directions and create the craft without it.
This simple watermelon project needs only colored paper! It is an ideal preschool craft for decorating. Download our complimentary pattern at the end of the post to cut the paper shapes, or design them yourself!
Use the directions below to transform it into a card, then write “You’re one in a melon!” inside. Alternatively, recreate the design with paint on a paper plate!
Supplies Needed
Note: To accommodate the largest paper piece, you’ll need a 12×12 size of the dark green paper so the provided pattern will fit. If not, choose the next smaller semi-circle as your largest piece and continue decreasing the sizes from there.
- Glue – Use standard glue or a glue stick. Since this project is made primarily of paper, I prefer a glue stick because it creates less mess.

How to Make a Watermelon Craft
1. Begin by printing the free pattern.
The pattern can be found at the bottom of this post.
You may also draw your own shapes as you follow along!
2. Fold a sheet of green cardstock.
Note: To accommodate the largest paper piece, you’ll need a 12×12 size of the dark green paper so the provided pattern will fit. If not, choose the next smaller semi-circle as your largest piece and continue decreasing the sizes from there.
Place the largest watermelon outline from the pattern on the green paper and trace around it.
3. Trim out the shape.
The watermelon card should now open up in this manner.
4. Fold a piece of white cardstock.
Trace the following largest semi-circle onto the white cardstock. Cut out the shape, then attach it inside the card with glue.
Although optional, this addition makes your message easier to see against the white paper.
5. Create the smaller semi-circle.
On lighter green paper, trace the next tiniest semi-circle shape, matching the one used for the white piece.
Cut along the outline.
6. Prepare the smallest semi-circle shape.
Trace the tiniest semi-circle onto red paper, then cut it out.
Attach this piece to the light green paper with glue.
Next, glue the light green and red pieces onto the dark green paper card.
7. Use the seed pattern, or create your own.
Trace the pattern onto black paper, then attach it to the card.
8. Create 9 black seeds.
Arrange and glue them along the edge of the red semi-circle.
9. Attach 2 large googly eyes.
10. Use a black marker to draw a smile.
11. Add your message inside the card.
We adore the adorable saying, ” You’re One in a Melon!”.
Your card is complete! This adorable summer project also makes a wonderful birthday card. You could even create one for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day!
