Why You Need More Houseplants: Benefits for Your Home

January is here, the weather is chilly, and we’re longing for our gardens…well, I have a simple solution for those winter blues! Treat yourself to a few new houseplants! Bringing several fresh plants into your home can offer countless advantages for both you and your space.

Advantages of Houseplants

Keeping houseplants in your home comes with plenty of benefits! They don’t just help me overcome the winter blues (by the middle of winter, I miss my garden terribly!!); they’re genuinely beneficial for you too!!

Every year, once the Christmas decorations are packed away and the house feels bare again…I end up purchasing a handful of new houseplants! Well, there are worse habits to have, right??

Here are several reasons why I believe you should bring home some plants too!!!

Plants Add Decorative Appeal

I enjoy placing houseplants throughout every room because they bring a natural, ornamental accent to your home. That splash of green can truly liven up a space!

Consider positioning plants on bookshelves, consoles, or tables in your entryway. Besides providing color, plants introduce a gentler feature that softens the sharp edges of books and lamps. They also bring organic texture and a soothing sense of motion.

I adore this effortless way of bringing the outdoors inside, and I can honestly say that having plants nearby lifts my spirits, particularly during the winter when I spend most of my time indoors here in New England.

Enhance the Air Quality at Home

Plants act as natural air cleaners! How amazing is that? Air-cleaning houseplants transform the carbon dioxide surrounding you into oxygen.

Popular varieties such as peace lilies, pothos, snake plants, and spider plants can also remove toxins and contaminants from the air.

Houseplants may also raise the humidity level in a room…which I appreciate because indoor air becomes extremely dry during winter when the heating is running and there’s little natural moisture outdoors.

Houseplants Support Your Health

Feeling overwhelmed??? Pick up a couple of plants!!

Plants can benefit your emotional health, ease tension, and support your general wellness. Remember how peaceful it is to stroll through a tree-filled park…so calming, isn’t it??

You can bring some of that lush, peaceful garden feeling into your own home by placing a few plants around your space.

Plants are also a wonderful addition to an office or work area!! They can support concentration, so place a small plant in the corner of your desk!! I have 5…although, now that I’m counting, it’s 6 plants in my office.

For areas with limited light, consider a snake plant or pothos in your workspace.

Many Houseplants Require Little Care

A wide variety of houseplants are undemanding, fairly low-maintenance, and simple to look after.

Looking after several houseplants is an excellent alternative when you don’t have a garden…you can make a small indoor garden of your own!

Of course, there are a few particularly temperamental houseplants I would recommend avoiding…I mean you, fiddle leaf fig and string of pearls!!!

Still, there are plenty of readily available varieties that are beginner-friendly and straightforward to maintain, even if you don’t consider yourself to have a green thumb.

  • Pothos
  • Monstera
  • Peace Lily
  • ZZ Plant

My top suggestion is to check the plant label while you’re shopping and choose a variety whose growing requirements you can provide.

The labels will indicate whether it prefers low light or moderate light, direct or indirect, watering routines, and so on. If there is limited information available, simply search the plant’s name on Google and you should find everything you need.

Another useful Google tip is for when you come across a plant without a name label: use the Lens feature in search, photograph the plant, and continue from there. I tried this recently while shopping for plants. The only information on the tag was “fern,” and I discovered that it was actually a Kangaroo Paw Fern!!

Plants are Budget-Friendly

Houseplants are an inexpensive way to bring greenery into your home, and they can help make a room look more complete.

Because houseplants have grown so popular in recent years, large retail stores have taken notice and now carry plenty of them at very reasonable prices.

The places where I have recently found the best houseplant prices include Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s.

I recently purchased a floor plant, two large hanging plants, and another plant in a lovely planter, and each one cost between $14-20.

Don’t overlook the hanging plants! The plastic hanging hooks can be removed, allowing you to place the pot directly into a planter.

Be sure to visit your local nursery too! I’m a big fan of my nearby Rolling Green Nursery in Greenland, NH. Their houseplant section is gorgeous and makes a wonderful place to spend part of a snowy afternoon! During my January plant shopping trip last year, I filled an entire cart with beautiful plants.

So Many Choices!

There are hundreds of houseplant varieties available, so you’ll have many different types to consider.

You’re sure to discover something that complements your personal taste or decorating style!

Some houseplants make a bold statement, including this polka dot Angel Wing Begonia.

I brought home this Calathea from Lowe’s the other day for less than $15. Its leaf designs are especially striking.

Houseplant Decorating Ideas

Once your plants are home, what can you do with them?? Begin by placing them in planters.

Look at the store where you purchased your plants to find out what planters they offer.

Large retail stores carry a respectable selection of planters, particularly during the Spring and Summer.

Thrift stores are another favorite destination of mine. I’ve discovered countless planters and baskets to use with my plants.

At times, I’ve refreshed them with paint or completed a small makeover, but I absolutely love a good thrift flip!!

My newest plant purchase (which I think is a Kangaroo Paw Fern) placed inside a $3 thrift store basket.

This is among my favorite thrift store transformations! A brass planter from Magnolia inspired it, but I couldn’t justify paying 30 bucks for such a small planter!!!

My Blue Cebu Blue Pothos thrives in dim lighting, making it an ideal choice for the entryway table. To the right, large windows offer bright morning sunlight and create excellent conditions for growth.

I found this unfamiliar variety at Lowe’s last week, where it cost $19.98.

Your kitchen deserves some greenery too! Since I spend plenty of time in this room, adding plants makes the space feel much more welcoming. This one is ‘Scindapsus Pictus‘, also known as silver vine, and belongs to the Satin Pothos family. I recently purchased it at Home Depot… I went in for a single item and came home with this plant as well!

I hope this has inspired you to give houseplants a try!

If you share your home with pets, research the variety before bringing it inside to ensure it is safe for them.
