Earth Day will be here soon, and we wanted to share this charming Earth Day Coffee Filter Watercolor Flower Craft. Creating watercolors with washable markers is so enjoyable. Just color the Earth at the center of a coffee filter, then mist it with water.
We tried several different backgrounds for this project. Nothing highlighted the watercolors quite like the contrast of black cardstock. It works beautifully because the black symbolizes outer space and the universe, while our Earth blossoms into a gorgeous flower.
Coffee Filter Watercolor Flower Earth Craft
To make this Earth Day project, gather coffee filters and washable markers in blue, green, and a little purple, along with black and green cardstock, a water-filled spray bottle, scissors, and a glue stick.
Earth Day Coffee Filter Watercolor Craft Supplies Needed
- Coffee filters
- Washable markers – blue, green, purple
- Cardstock – black, green
- Water-filled spray bottle
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Earth Watercolor Coffee Filter Craft Step by Step Directions
First, set a coffee filter on top of newspapers or another protective covering, since you will be spraying it with water.
Start by sketching the Earth inside the coffee filter’s center circle. We used green first to create the land.
After that, color the remaining areas blue for the water, adding a few touches of purple.
Next, mist the middle of the coffee filter with one generous spray from the water bottle. The colors should merge, but they should not wash away entirely. For that reason, using less water is best. When the spray lands in the right spot, one good spritz should be enough.
Allow the coffee filter to air-dry.
As the coffee filter dries, cut a basic stem strip and leaf shape from the green cardstock.
Attach the stem and leaf to the lower portion of a piece of black cardstock with glue.
Once the coffee filter has dried completely, glue only its center just above the stem. The water will cause the coffee filter to flatten, so we gently folded some of the edges upward again.
This Earth craft is both lovely and entertaining, and it gives us a chance to reuse materials already on hand. Happy Earth Day!
