Fourth of July Flag Wafers

How many flags can be prepared from one package of vanilla wafers?

Since each flag cookie contains 2 wafers, one package of vanilla wafers will make 15 flag wafers (provided the package includes 30 wafers).

Is it okay to leave the wafers out overnight?

Leaving the cookies uncovered causes them to become stale and lose their fresh flavor. Keep them in an airtight container, a Ziploc bag, or closed cello bags.

What is the fastest and simplest method for decorating these?

  • Start by adding the blue chocolate and sprinkles to every set of wafers.
  • Then decorate all the wafers with the red stripes, followed by the white stripes.
  • This method keeps the chocolate from having to be melted again and again and helps speed up the decorating process.

  • Divide the red, white, and blue chocolate melts among separate bowls. Heat them according to the package directions, then stir until silky.

  • Transfer the melted chocolate into icing bags, then snip a small opening from the end of each bag.

  • Pipe a strip of melted white chocolate down the long edge of one wafer cookie. Press a second wafer into the melted chocolate, keeping both cookies level on your work surface while the chocolate sets.

  • Cover the blue rectangle entirely with the melted blue chocolate.

  • Before the blue chocolate sets, promptly scatter the white sprinkles over it.

  • For the red stripes, follow the wafer cookie’s grid lines as a guide. Pipe melted red chocolate across a width equal to 1 gridline, leaving an empty line between each red stripe for the white stripes. Allow the red chocolate to set for around 30 seconds before adding the white stripes.

  • Use the white chocolate to complete the white stripes. Leave them to set fully for approximately 30 minutes, or longer when necessary.
