For far too long, I have been hoping to get new barstools for our kitchen. Up to this point, our 6′ kitchen island had space for only 2 (such a waste!). I am also a little ashamed to say that those 2 barstools were inexpensive, store-bought models. They did not coordinate with our home and had become extremely old and worn. Still, I kept delaying the project because I was waiting for our new kitchen.
Because we intended to renovate our kitchen this fall, I created plans for new bar-height benches. The idea was to make two attractive double bar stool benches that could comfortably seat 4 people altogether. However, delays with the patio pergola caused by weather beyond our control meant the holidays were approaching, and we could not be without a functioning kitchen, so we postponed the kitchen renovation until early the following year.
Nevertheless, the barstool bench plans remained. I was also tired of seeing those unattractive, inexpensive, store-bought barstools. I picked up my Kreg Jig and began working on a solution to our barstool problem. These bar-height benches are incredibly fast to assemble, and the second one goes even more quickly once you understand the process. To reduce expenses and clear out the garage, I repurposed scrap 2×6 boards, cutting them into 2×3 and 1×2 boards with my table saw. Despite the additional work, both barstool benches were finished within a few hours.
To improve the wooden bar stool benches even further, I included an upholstered seat. As a result, the barstool benches are attractive, practical, and comfortable. They create the ideal spot for family and friends to sit and spend time while I cook. Plus, covering a straightforward bench seat like these with fabric is fast and uncomplicated!
I upholstered our barstool benches using leftover drop cloth scraps from my most recent drop cloth projects. This material is highly durable and withstands the abuse my children will undoubtedly put these benches through. Drop cloth is affordable as well, and I certainly appreciate inexpensive materials! Best of all, the upholstered seat attaches to the barstool base with only 6 pocket hole screws. If the upholstery becomes damaged, I can simply remove it and install fresh fabric, making the barstool benches look new again!
