Together, we’re going to create a paper plate love bug. There’s no single way a love bug has to appear; it may be goofy or charming, circular or square. It can look like anything, provided the final result is LOVEly. For this project, we’ll use a paper plate, decorate it with paint, and combine it with heart-shaped doilies. Our love bug turns out wonderfully cute and is very simple to create.
Bee Mine Paper plate Valentines – Materials
- Paper plate
- Pink and red paint
- Paintbrush and circular paint sponge
- 2 googly eyes
- Glue
- Black marker
- 2 heart-shaped doilies
- 2 wooden clothespins
- 2 red pom poms
How to create a paper plate love bug
Alternative – create the dots with fingerprints to turn this into an especially precious toddler keepsake craft!
Begin by painting the paper plate pink. A large paintbrush will help you complete this step more quickly. My boys also really enjoy painting with paint sponges. It’s both speedy and entertaining. While the plate is drying thoroughly, paint one side of each of the two wooden clothespins red.
Reminder: the clothespins are a wonderful addition to many fine motor skill activities you might already be doing!
With a round paintbrush, add red stripes to the paper plate. Alternatively, as noted above, make this a fingerprint keepsake project by using your fingers! Keep the upper section pink, since the eyes and mouth will be placed there. Attach the two googly eyes, then use a black marker to draw a smile directly beneath them.
Now we can use the heart-shaped doilies and transform them into precious heart wings for our love bug. Attach the doilies to the back of the paper plate with glue.
For the final step, create the love bug’s antennae using the red-painted wooden clothespins and red pom poms. Secure a pom pom to the top of each clothespin with glue.
