It’s been a little while since we created a “hug a book bookmark”! These are such a delightful and simple way to design bookmarks…. Imagine a classic long, rectangular book bookmark, but with the extra charm of wrapping around your page. So, today’s Hug a Book project is this sweet Goat Bookmark Craft with templates! Hooray. It’s so enjoyable and adorable. Naturally, you can make this little goat bookmark WITHOUT a template, but the template is available to guide you if needed!

This charming goat bookmark would be ideal for anyone searching for a Three Billy Goats Gruff project, or for Chinese New Year 2027, which celebrates the Year of the Goat!! Create the goat using red and yellow paper and add golden horns!! You could also write “Happy New Year” greetings on the main body of the Goat Bookmark! What fun.
Hug a Book Goat Craft – Materials required

We’re fans of bookmark crafts because the materials required are wonderfully simple!!
- Paper in your chosen colors (as you can see, we painted some white paper grey.. so if you lack the right colours, adding a little paint can be enjoyable too!)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Printable if using our templates, although as noted, they are optional. You can design your own goat features and give your goat its own special character! NOTE: the template is rather large – this makes cutting easier. For a somewhat smaller bookmark, simply set your pinter setting to 75% or something similar!
You can download the simple template at no cost from my Gumroad store (enter $0 at checkout, please don’t tip, as Gumroad is dreadful, but Buy Me a Coffee is a wonderful alternative) OR purchase classroom-ready (or library-ready) worksheets for a small fee through my Teacher’s Pay Teacher’s store! Children always enjoy these for more independent activities!

Paper Goat Bookmark Video Guide:
As usual, we have a helpful video guide, or you can use the detailed photo directions below!

How to create a Hug a Book Goat Bookmark
Get your shapes ready

As noted earlier, if you don’t have paper in the colors you want, you can use printer paper and paint it beforehand! This adds another enjoyable stage to the craft! Allow it to dry completely/ flatten it beneath a few books before beginning your project!
Next, get the shapes you’ll need ready:
- One long rectangle shaped like a bookmark in the Goat Body Color
- One rounded square/ rectangle that fits the bookmark and forms the Goat HEAD
- Two ears
- A black “cloud” shaped tuffed and goaty
- Some white eyes & rosy cheeks
- Some horns
- Small rectangular legs and small rectangular hooves (with a triangle snipped into them), four of each are required
- A small body piece
Put together the legs:

Stick the leg pieces together with glue.
As another option, draw the hooves onto the bottoms of the legs using a black marker.
Put together your goat face:

- Stick on the eyes
- Attach the cheeks
- Place on the goaty and tuffed
- Attach the ears
- Place on the horns

Use a pen to add the remaining details – the eye pupils, a nose, a mouth, and some decoration on the horns.

Attach the legs that hug the book
After completing the head, you can attach the front legs. These go on at this stage because they are the ones that will “embrace” your book!

Putting the Goat Together
Now it’s time to complete the bookmark!
NOTE: the long body rectangle might need a little trimming so it matches the head perfectly/neatly!

Attach the head to the body – take care NOT to glue the legs in place – they should stay free.

Next, add the final features to your goat – its gentle brown tummy and back legs!

Your Goat Bookmark is complete! Isn’t it fun?

Slip it into your book and have fun!
