We’ve prepared an enjoyable paper craft to help you investigate what lives in your backyard or local park!

Today’s printable has been created in partnership with Learning Resources, a website full of educational yet FUN activities for children.

We adore this FORTUNE TELLER because:

  • You can enjoy crafting and colouring with your children (why not try it outdoors in the garden?),
  • You and your child or children can discover several new facts about bugs – and even make up your own bug-themed questions and answers,
  • You can spark your child’s curiosity about these tiny neighbours and view them from a fresh perspective,
  • Finally, you can encourage the kids to head outside, hunt for bugs and observe them carefully!

Choose from three versions:

The first Fortune Teller puts your knowledge of bugs to the test! Can you answer the questions? For instance:

Q: Which bug loses its skin like a snake?

A: A caterpillar.

The second Fortune Teller features 8 bugs. Go outdoors and search for them, mark them off as you spot them and write each bug’s name beside its picture. Record the most fascinating thing you discover about the bug.

The third Fortune Teller lets you design your own Bug Quiz! Will your friends be able to answer correctly?! Choose 8 bugs, then come up with 8 questions and answers. Enter them into the Fortune Teller.

How to make your Fortune Teller

Colour in the bugs sheet

Download and print the template. Take some peaceful time to colour it in.

fold the cootie catcher

Trim out the square template. Flip it over so the picture is facing the tabletop. Bring each of the four corners into the centre and crease them.

Flip the Fortune Teller over, then fold all four corners into the centre once more.

fold the fortune teller

Gently fold the square template closed to form a rectangle. Unfold it, then crease it in the opposite direction too.

Next, carefully slide your thumbs and index fingers into the pockets and press them into shape.

Well done! Your very own Fortune Teller is ready!

How to play

how to play

Once your Fortune Teller is complete, here’s how you can play with it!

As noted, we’ve made 3 different versions of this Bug Fortune Teller for you. Whichever one you use, we suggest going outside to find the bug you have “landed on”… You can add personal bug facts or draw your own insects to tailor it to the place where you live.

Here’s the basic way to play with these bug fortune tellers:

Gather your friends and begin moving the Fortune Teller with your thumbs and index fingers from side to side, then up and down.

Can you see the image above? Moving it sideways reveals the numbers 8,1,4 and 5. Moving it lengthwise shows the numbers 2,3,6 and 7.

Continue moving it while asking one of your friends to say ‘Stop’.

As soon as you hear ‘Stop’, pause and hold the Fortune Teller open. Then invite your friend to select one of the visible numbers. They may choose from 8,1,4,5 or 2,3,6,7.

Suppose your friend picks 2. Read the question aloud and let your friend attempt the answer. If they answer correctly, they get to operate the Fortune Teller. If not, you can start another round with a different friend.
