Thrift shops are among my favorite secret tools for styling my home. They provide countless objects that can be renewed and blended into nearly any decorating aesthetic.
With a little imagination, an inexpensive secondhand find can become a distinctive statement piece that brings character and coziness to any space.
And don’t overlook the value of making some of your own decorations! You might be amazed at how easily you can achieve an upscale designer appearance.

In simple terms, a secondhand budget means choosing pre-owned items instead of purchasing every piece new. One of my favorite recent tricks is adding smart bulbs to my living room lamps, which lets me switch them on or off and adjust their brightness right from my phone.
When purchasing lamps secondhand, most shops will let you test the bulb and plug to confirm that everything works. Be sure to take advantage of this, since some stores do not accept returns.

In the living room, one simple solution is placing two wicker baskets on my coffee table shelf. I use one for an extra throw blanket and the other for magazines, books, and remotes.

This Pottery Barn-style vase began as a thrift store treasure a few years ago. It stays somewhere in my home throughout the year because it suits every season and looks lovely with anything inside. Whether I use fresh, dried, or faux stems, they all look beautiful in it!

Every thrift store is different, and certain locations may offer superior merchandise or lower prices. Below are a few important details to keep in mind while looking for the ideal thrift shop.
Location
The store’s location is one of the first things to think about when searching for thrift shops. Choose places that are convenient to reach and situated in neighborhoods you visit regularly. That way, dropping in to browse will be easy whenever you have a bit of spare time.
You should also explore thrift stores in nearby towns or various neighborhoods, since doing so can improve your odds of discovering unusual and appealing pieces.
Here in my part of New Hampshire, the nearby Savers is typically a treasure trove, while the Goodwill a few towns over is generally disappointing!
From what I’ve personally noticed, thrift stores in the more prosperous towns around me tend to carry better-quality goods. The same principle applies to yard sales…browse the more upscale neighborhoods.
Item Quality
The condition of the merchandise is another major consideration when choosing a thrift store. Although gently used items can offer excellent bargains, inspect each piece closely before buying it. Seek out things that are in solid shape, and take a moment to examine everything before placing it in your cart.
I’m also the strange person who smells everything…I look for that stale, musty odor on baskets, textiles, and wooden items.
A wobbly table leg doesn’t always mean you should pass it by; see whether a loose screw is the culprit and can be tightened in just a moment.
Prices
Price is also an important aspect to evaluate when looking for thrift stores. Affordable finds are ideal, but you should steer clear of shops that charge too much. Understand what things should cost! Recently, I’ve spotted dollar store items at my thrift shop being sold for $3-4!!
It’s also worthwhile to seek out stores that offer discount days or clearance sales. I recommend signing up for the shop’s rewards program or mailing list so you can hear about future promotions and markdowns. The Savers emails I joined often send me additional discount codes.
Here’s one of my favorite tricks for determining whether a thrift store item may be valuable: take out your phone and open Google Lens through the Google app. It will show comparable products. This tool is also useful when you don’t know what an object is or want to examine the markings underneath china or pottery.

Tips for Shopping on a Budget
If you’ve followed my website for some time, you already know how much I enjoy the Pottery Barn aesthetic! I’ve developed ways to shop for a similar style. However, it does require plenty of browsing online! Honestly, taking a little extra time to compare stores and prices can save you a significant amount on home decorating.
One method I use to locate Pottery Barn-inspired pieces is to run a Google Lens search using the product’s stock image. The results will display a range of similar items…and occasionally they’re identical products sold for a fraction of the cost!! (Check out my PB-inspired floor lamp post!).

Decorating your home affordably can be easier with DIY decor projects, which help reduce costs while bringing a unique personal feel to your space. Below are several DIY decorating concepts and projects using thrifted pieces.
Giving Preowned Pieces New Life
Repurposing items you already own or discover at a thrift shop is one of the simplest ways to cut home decor expenses. Here are a few projects I completed:
During this thrift store haul, I discovered plenty of pieces that I used to decorate the house this fall. One was this extremely dated artificial floral arrangement. However, I paused to notice that its cement base resembled something you might see in a high-end catalog!
I took out the dated flowers and placed a simple trailing succulent inside. It can be displayed throughout the year, and the total cost was only $5.
Although I wasn’t fond of the leaf pattern on this painted vase, its silhouette reminded me of Pottery Barn pieces. Using a little black spray paint and some hand-painted hash marks, I transformed it into a stylish vase.
Until fairly recently, many people associated thrifting with shabby-looking items. I’m delighted that the secondhand and thrifting trend has become so popular!
Everything arranged on my console cabinet came from secondhand sources! The only exceptions are the gourds I grew and the felt acorn garland I made myself.
Silver items are another treasure commonly found while shopping secondhand. Vintage silver serving trays and ice buckets can easily become containers for faux floral displays. The aged silver adds extra charm to this understated lily of the valley arrangement.
Making Your Own Abstract Artwork
Creating your own artwork is another excellent way to lower decorating costs. Here’s how I saved $$$ while producing a large artwork for my living room wall.
I wanted a dramatic seascape…highly abstract!! For this project, I chose a blank 24 x 36 inch canvas along with 4 paint colors.
Begin with the deepest shade at the bottom, then gradually move upward across the canvas. I swept my brush in a wave-like motion from side to side to distribute the paint.
For the following shade, I switched to a fresh paintbrush and continued working across the canvas.
Once two shades covered the canvas, I softened the area where they joined by blending them together, eliminating any harsh dividing line.
For added depth, I stippled white paint along the point where the darker shades met at the bottom. At the top, I blended a touch of dark gray with the pink and white, creating a cloud-like effect. As I painted, I pictured a stormy day by the seaside as my source of inspiration.
Because this is abstract art, there is no perfect or incorrect method. For the final detail, I lightly coated the ends of my broad brush with white paint, removed most of it on a paper towel, and moved my hand in an X pattern to add subtle highlights across the canvas.
When creating a sizable piece of wall art, it can be useful to display it temporarily and view it from a distance. I tried this myself and noticed that another layer of white paint was needed to enhance its texture and depth.
