I like to imagine that I have a “personal” relationship with this book, because I am 99.9% sure that, as a teenager, I made a rag doll similar to this one. I recall spending AGES embroidering the face. It was incredibly rewarding and unbelievably cute. But do not worry—if embroidery concerns you (which I completely understand, since it takes practice), the book also includes a wonderfully detailed section explaining how to paint these lovely heirloom doll faces.

Wisp the Little Ghost

Fabric Pieces and Supplies

4″ x 3″ (10.2 x 7.7–cm) piece of acrylic or wool white felt*
2 ghost shapes
Fine needle for embroidery
Standard black thread
Standard white thread
Pointed pencil
Optional: cotton swab and pink or coral blush

*NOTE: For extra fun, I included the softie ghost pattern in two sizes—the book contains one size, which is just right for fitting into the little Witch’s hands. I included two versions here so you can also sew with younger children and bring them along as they learn this skill!

How to create a felt Ghost Softie (including free pdf pattern)

Using the Little Ghost pattern, cut out two ghost shapes. [NOTE: For extra fun, I included the softie ghost pattern in two sizes—the book contains one size, which is just right for fitting into the little Witch’s hands. I included two versions here so you can also sew with younger children and bring them along as they learn this skill!]

cut out your ghost patterns in white felt

Set the paper Ghost pattern over one of the felt ghost shapes you have just cut. With a very sharp pencil, pierce through the eyes and mouth line to indicate their positions on the ghost’s face.

With black thread and a needle, embroider the circular eye first, then sew a half-circle around it as illustrated. [NOTE: this method is explained thoroughly in the book. If you are not comfortable stitching this style of eye, you can substitute small black split pins or safety eyes instead]

Do the same for the other eye, then embroider a U-shaped mouth.

Position the two ghost pieces together, keeping the embroidered piece facing upward. Secure the layers with pins.

Sew around the entire ghost using a blanket stitch, leaving a small gap along the bottom edge (right side) of the doll. To make it even sweeter, apply pink or coral blush with a cotton swab. [NOTE: the book provides details about sewing stitches. I also have a Basic Handstitches for Beginners guide, which includes the Blanket Stitch for you.
