The Workspace is situated in Rajkot, a city celebrated for its rich cultural legacy, historic structures, and lively craft bazaars. Created by MHDA, the project responds to this inventive setting through a considered and modern design approach. It offers a fresh interpretation of the creative studio. As the base for the multidisciplinary practice, it unites architecture, interior, and product design beneath one roof. Carefully crafted to feel thoughtful, refined, and highly personal, the studio allows creativity to move freely. At the same time, it provides a peaceful setting for contemplation, teamwork, and creation.

Created for Change
The designers envisioned the workspace as a blank canvas shaped by Zen-inspired calm and the liberty to experiment. Every component supports adjustment and versatility. Like a child shifting Lego blocks into new formations, the studio instinctively changes in response to mood, requirement, or creativity. The custom furniture expresses this principle through its portable and progressive nature. Made with teakwood, organic textures, and earthy surfaces, each object gives familiar elements a renewed identity. Through movement, every piece defines the space’s character, purpose, and ambience.

The joy comes from this sense of freedom, as every adjustment and reconfiguration creates an opportunity for discovery. With each change, the studio gains vitality while subtly reshaping daily experience. This furniture and interior philosophy mirrors the developing character of our young practice. The workspace was planned to evolve and expand in step with our future requirements. Sensitive to life’s finer details, the studio conveys our design principles and communicates our vocabulary to every visitor. An enduring commitment to detail informs every object we have carefully made. Collectively, these features help the layout unfold with ease and authenticity, steering clear of a sterile, predictable, or excessively styled composition.

Created with Purpose
Whether fully restoring two black chairs recovered from the scrapyards of Alang or producing the carefully crafted multi-panel folding partition, every choice in the design is intentional. With its varied openings, the partition provides multiple levels of privacy and encourages playful interaction throughout the studio, transforming the setting with every arrangement.

The library unit carries the same level of accuracy, with a stepped pattern repeated across its sides and legs, complemented by a chequered veneer finish on the shutter. Even a minor feature such as the door handle receives careful treatment: a solid wooden block discreetly hides the recess used to open it. The result is never overstated, although every element has been thoughtfully and rigorously examined.

The project is rooted in the understanding that the tiniest and most understated elements can influence an entire setting. Shaped by these delicate considerations, the design pursues understated elegance and dimensionality. Through its continually responsive character, the Workspace becomes a record of the connection between people and their environment—remaining receptive to varied readings and changing viewpoints—so the space can be understood—and experienced—in a new way each time.
