This owl project is incredibly enjoyable to create!
Children will have fun forming the owls with their handprints and decorating them with feathers. Creating the tree limbs is enjoyable too!

Creating a Handprint Owl
1. Begin by forming your tree and limbs. Take strips of newspaper and roll them into the sizes you want. Make the trunk considerably broader than the branches. Crumple the paper as you roll it to add some dimension to the tree trunk and branches.
Secure or adhere your newspaper to the white 12×12 cardstock.
You may paint the branches and tree once they are arranged on the paper, or paint the newspaper beforehand. Older children and more experienced painters may find it simpler to paint after positioning the newspaper. For younger children, painting the newspaper first and then assembling the tree and branches may be easier.
2. Outline your handprints and attach them to the branches. Alternatively, prepare the owls first and glue them on at the end.
To create your owl, you will also need:
- 2 white eyes (we used a glue stick to trace the correct size).
- A small beak – take yellow cardstock and sketch a triangle. Fold it, cut it out, and attach it to your owl.
- Make two tiny triangles for the owl’s ears and glue them behind the handprint.
- Use a black marker or sharpie to draw small eyes.
- Attach feathers to the thumb and pinky finger with glue.
3. To complete the design, cut 4 leaves from the green cardstock and attach them to your paper.

The owls can be made in any colors you prefer! We really like the combination of orange and blue, though pink and blue or orange and red would also create lovely fall shades.
Teachers can create a large owl display and invite the children to help build the tree and branches using newspaper.
