What could the world’s greatest dad use? A trophy! His favorite people can create one for him with our incredibly simple and heartwarming Paper Plate Father’s Day Trophy Craft!
A paper plate makes up most of the supplies for this award-winning Father’s Day project. For the few additional parts, we’ve included a Free Printable Trophy Template to make sizing easier. The template also provides guidance for shaping and sizing the trophy handles. Put everything together, and you have a charming trophy craft for an amazing dad.
Father’s Day Paper Plate Trophy Craft
To create this paper plate trophy, begin by printing our trophy template.
You’ll also need a paper plate, yellow and blue cardstock, a black sharpie, scissors, and a glue stick. In addition, gather gold acrylic paint. If gold isn’t available and you only have yellow paint, mix in a little orange to create a richer shade.

- Trophy Template
- Paper plate
- Gold acrylic paint – or yellow and orange
- Cardstock – yellow, blue
- Black sharpie
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Father’s Day Trophy Craft Step by Step Directions
Paint one paper plate gold to get started.
Since we didn’t have gold paint, we blended yellow with a small quantity of orange. Allow the paint to dry fully.
Once the paint has dried, divide the paper plate into two halves. Put one half to the side.
From the straight edge of the remaining half, cut a strip about 2 inches wide.
After that, divide the leftover piece into thirds. You should have one rectangle and two triangle-like pieces.
Secure the rectangle to the lower strip with glue. Then attach the rectangle’s top edge to the curved side/bottom of the uncut paper plate half.
Print the trophy template and cut out each component. Use the leftover triangular paper plate pieces to trace the handles, then cut them out.
Glue the handles onto both sides of the trophy.
Trace the star onto blue cardstock and cut it out. Next, trace the rectangular plaque onto yellow cardstock and cut out that piece.
Position and glue the star at the award’s center.
On the yellow rectangle, write #1 Dad, 1st Place Dad, Best Dad, or another message with the black sharpie.
Attach the rectangular plaque to the paper plate strip at the trophy’s base. Depending on the strip’s size, you might have to trim the plaque so it fits.

Instructions
- Start by painting a paper plate gold, then allow the paint to dry completely.
- After the paint dries, cut the paper plate into two halves and place one half aside.
- From the flat edge of the other half, cut a strip approximately 2 inches wide.
- Divide the remaining section into thirds to create one rectangle and two triangular pieces.
- Use glue to attach the rectangle to the bottom strip.
- Next, secure the rectangle’s upper edge to the curved side/bottom of the uncut paper plate half.
- Print the trophy template, then cut out all of its pieces.
- Place the handle shapes over the remaining triangular paper plate pieces, trace them, and cut them out.
- Glue the handles onto the trophy’s sides.
- Trace and cut the star from blue cardstock. Then trace and cut the rectangular plaque from yellow cardstock.
- Center the star on the award and glue it down.
- Write #1 Dad, 1st Place Dad, Best Dad, or another saying on the yellow rectangle using the black sharpie.
- Glue the rectangular plaque onto the paper plate strip at the trophy’s bottom. Trim it if necessary so it fits the width of your paper plate strip.
Notes
When gold paint is unavailable, combine yellow paint with a little orange.
