This Paper Plate Ice Skating Craft is incredibly enjoyable! It’s honestly hard to describe it with any other word. This winter project includes a little of everything: painting, watercolors, and yarn lacing, all brought together to create an adorable ice skating winter scene. Naturally, it also comes with a Free Printable Ice Skates Template.
Although anyone can enjoy this project, it’s especially perfect for people who like the thought of ice skating but may not feel coordinated enough to glide across the rink. Falling is always a possibility. Fortunately, crafting doesn’t involve falling—unless you drop your scissors. I do that pretty frequently.
Technically, I’ve never been ice skating. When I was little, I would slide across a pond close to our home. I have tried roller skating, however, and it didn’t go particularly well. We’ll leave that story there. I’m perfectly content with our sweet ice skating winter craft.
Ice Skating Winter Paper Plate Watercolor Craft
To begin making this ice skating project, print our ice skates template.
Gather paper plates, watercolors, silver acrylic paint, cardstock in any colors you prefer, regular-size craft sticks, white yarn, a white chalk marker, a single hole punch, tape, glue dots, and scissors as well.

- White yarn

Step-by-Step Directions for the Ice Skating Watercolor Craft
Start by using winter-colored watercolors to paint an ice skating rink on a paper plate.
For our plates, we chose plenty of blue and purple shades. Simply paint with the colors and blend them together. Allow the artwork to dry fully.
Each skate also requires either two regular-size craft sticks or one regular-size stick along with two mini sticks, all painted with gray acrylic paint. Set them aside until they are completely dry too.
While the paint dries, print the ice skate shapes onto the cardstock color you selected. Then, cut out each skate.
Make a series of holes across the front portion of the skate, taking care not to place them too near the edge.
Snip off a short piece of white yarn. Thread one end through the hole at the end, then secure that starting end with tape.
Begin threading the yarn over the paper’s edge and through all the holes.
After lacing is complete, fasten the loose end to the back of the skate with tape.
Do the same thing with the second ice skate.
Now decorate the skates with a white chalk marker. You could also use standard markers, metallic pens, stickers, or other embellishments.
Once the craft sticks have dried, cut one regular-size stick into two equal pieces.
Using glue dots, attach the whole stick across the ends of the two half pieces to create the ice skate blade. We avoid hot glue when crafting with children, and glue dots provide a strong hold. Next, secure the blade to the ice skate with additional glue dots.
To finish this charming winter wonderland art project, arrange the ice skates on the watercolor skating rink. It’s incredibly cute!

Instructions
- Begin by painting an ice skating rink on a paper plate with winter-themed watercolors.
- We selected many blue and purple tones for our paper plates. Paint the shades together and blend them as desired. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- For every skate, paint two regular-size craft sticks, or one regular-size stick and two mini sticks, using gray acrylic paint. Leave them to dry thoroughly.
- While the paint is drying, print the ice skates onto the cardstock color you chose.
- Trim out the ice skate shapes.
- Create holes along the skate’s front section, keeping them a safe distance from the edge.
- Snip a short piece of white yarn. Thread one end through the end hole, then tape the starting end securely.
- Continue lacing the yarn over the paper edge and through every hole.
- Once complete, tape the remaining end onto the back of the skate.
- Repeat these steps with the other ice skate.
- Decorate the skates with a white chalk marker, or use regular markers, metallic markers, stickers, and more.
- After the craft sticks have dried, divide one regular-size stick in half.
- Attach the complete stick across the ends of the two half sticks with glue dots to form the skate blade. Since we craft with children, we prefer not to use hot glue, and glue dots hold securely.
- Use more glue dots to attach the blade to the ice skate.
- Lastly, arrange the ice skates on the watercolor rink to finish this adorable winter wonderland art and craft activity.
