To dress up like a pilgrim, all you need is a pilgrim hat, and this charming Pilgrim Hat Craft is perfect! We’ve also included a Free Printable Pilgrim Hat Template, so simply trace the shapes, cut out the pieces, and assemble everything into your pilgrim hat headband. After that, you’ll be all set to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!
We decorated our hats with turkey feathers, which are included in the printable as well. However, you can certainly skip the feathers if you prefer. They’re simply a playful final detail and an easy way to bring in some color. Although, I’m not sure pilgrims were especially focused on colorful accessories in those days.
Printable Pilgrim Hat Thanksgiving Craft
To make your pilgrim hats, begin by printing our pilgrim hat template.
You’ll also need cardstock in black and any other colors you select, along with scissors, a glue stick, and a stapler.
Pilgrim Hat Craft Supplies Needed
- Pilgrim Hat Template
- Cardstock – black, brown, yellow, orange, red, etc.
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Stapler
Thanksgiving Pilgrim Hat Step by Step Directions
First, print the pilgrim hat template, then cut out each piece.
Trace 3 large strips and the upper hat shape onto black cardstock, then cut them out. The template contains two strips, so simply trace one of them a second time. As you’ll likely notice, just two strips aren’t long enough to go around the head.
Next, trace and cut out the hatband using the color you prefer. We selected brown. You’ll also need a buckle in a color of your choosing. Fold the buckle square and carefully cut out a center opening. Don’t forget to cut out the turkey feathers as well.
Next, attach one black strip to the bottom edge of the hat shape with glue.
Position the hatband immediately above the black strip and glue it down. Trim off any extra material.
Attach the buckle, keeping its top portion unglued.
Tuck and glue the turkey feathers behind the upper part of the buckle. After arranging all the feathers, glue down the top of the buckle.
To finish, staple one of the remaining strips to the end of the first strip.
Use the final strip to adjust the headband to the child’s head size, then staple it securely. Finally, wrap it around and staple both remaining ends together to complete your pilgrim headband.
And just like that, you’re a pilgrim! Or at least you can enjoy pretending to be one.

- Attach the buckle, leaving its top section unglued.
- Glue the turkey feathers behind the upper part of the buckle.
- After positioning all the feathers, glue the top of the buckle.
- Finally, staple one remaining strip to the end of the first strip.
- Adjust the last strip so it fits the child’s head, then staple it securely. Wrap it around and staple the two final ends together to complete the headband.
Notes
- If you want a more traditional pilgrim hat, you can leave the feathers off.
