We’ve had so much fun creating tape resist artwork lately. It’s an enjoyable technique for adding colorful sections to an art project. I immediately thought we should use it to make Christmas trees, and I’m thrilled with how our Tape Resist Christmas Tree Craft came out. They’re easy to create yet absolutely beautiful!
For our tape resist designs, we use washi tape. It generally works well, although it may occasionally lift some of the paper. This doesn’t happen frequently, but it is possible. The key is to avoid pushing the washi tape down. Place the strips gently without applying any force. Painter’s tape or masking tape can also be used.
We selected the narrowest washi tape strips for this project to create very fine lines, similar to garland wrapped around a Christmas tree. Using a small paintbrush is helpful as well, since it keeps the paint from spreading across the lines.
Christmas Tree Tape Resist Art Craft
To create these Christmas trees, gather acrylic paints in any colors you prefer, sturdy white cardstock, brown and yellow cardstock, narrow rolls of washi tape, scissors, and a glue stick.
Christmas Tree Art Craft Supplies Needed
- Acrylic paint – colors of your choice
- Cardstock – white, brown, yellow
- Washi tape, narrow rolls
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Christmas Tape Resist Craft Step by Step Directions
Start by trimming triangles from a piece of white cardstock.
Choose whatever dimensions and forms you like for the triangles. They can be tall, short, broad, or narrow. At this stage, let your creativity lead the way.
After pouring all of your selected paint shades onto a palette, place slim strips of washi tape across one of the triangles.
Once the tape is in position, paint the spaces between each strip.
We used plenty of green shades for our Christmas trees, along with red and blue and a touch of yellow. We also added a little pink and purple.
After covering the design with paint, gently peel away the washi tape strips. Allow the artwork to dry fully before continuing.
When the paint has dried, cut a rectangle out of brown cardstock and attach it to the bottom of the tree with glue.
To finish, sketch a basic star onto yellow cardstock.
Trim out the star and glue it to the top of the Christmas tree. This delightful Christmas project is sure to keep everyone occupied through a chilly afternoon.
