Searching for a simple autumn craft for children? You’ll adore this wooden spoon scarecrow project! Children will have fun creating these charming scarecrows, and you can personalize them in any style you prefer.

Affordable wooden spoons are available at dollar stores or on Amazon. Kids will enjoy decorating each one, and once the craft is finished, they can even use them for a puppet performance! These spoons are also wonderful props for storytelling.

Create a single scarecrow or several wooden spoon scarecrows using a variety of colors!
Supplies Needed
- Wooden Spoons – we chose these wooden spoons.
- Small googly eyes
- Fine point sharpie
- Acrylic Paint – our colors were light brown, pink, blue and orange
- Felt – yellow felt was used for the hair, while orange felt was used for the nose.
- Twine
- Burlap Ribbon
- Hot glue – hot glue helps keep the hat and additional pieces securely attached. Adult supervision is necessary.

How to Make a Wooden Spoon Scarecrow
1. Begin with a basic wooden spoon. Dollar stores are usually a good place to find them, or you can order these wooden spoons from Amazon.
Choosing a spoon with a 2 inch wide end provides extra room for the scarecrow’s hair and facial details.
2. Cover the wooden spoon with non-toxic acrylic paint. We painted the upper section light brown, then used blue and orange for the lower portion.
3. Create the scarecrow hat from burlap ribbon:
For this craft, we selected burlap ribbon measuring 2.5 inches across.
First, snip off a short section and fold it over to form the crown of the hat. (The video demonstrates this step!)
Then cut a longer strip for the brim of the ham and fold it lengthwise.
Attach the two sections with glue. Next, tug on the edges and make several snips so the hat has a slightly untidy appearance.
4. Secure the hat onto the spoon’s upper section with glue.
5. Attach 2 tiny googly eyes.
6. Cut an orange felt triangle and add it as the nose.
7. Use a black sharpie to draw on the mouth.
Note – if the face is not painted, the sharpie may bleed onto the wooden spoon. We discovered that painting it first helped prevent the sharpie from bleeding.
Add two pink paint dots for the cheeks with the back of a paintbrush.
8. To complete the look, cut several narrow pieces of yellow felt to create the hair.
Attach the strips along the sides of the scarecrow’s face with glue.
We also placed a few strands on top of the hat.
9. Glue a small section of burlap ribbon around the spoon handle near the top.
Place a tied piece of twine over it and glue it in place.
9. Your spoon scarecrows are finished!
They make wonderful story spoons, or you can arrange them in a mason jar as decoration! We also used burlap ribbon and twine to embellish the mason jar.
