Creating a Giant Bubble Wand
A handful of items from the hardware store are all you need to build your own giant bubble wand. With this straightforward DIY project, kids will be delighted by the impressive size of the bubbles.
Required Supplies
For the giant bubble wand:
- 2 screw hooks
- washers (or a different round weight)
- 2 wooden rods
- cotton cord
For the giant bubble mixture:
- 6 cups water
- 1.5 cups dish soap (Dawn dish soap is our recommendation, though another good-quality dish soap should work too – avoid natural varieties)
- 1/4 cup glycerin (food grade)
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- large container – for holding the bubble mixture

Creating a Giant Bubble Wand
1. Install the screw hooks.
First, screw the hooks into the upper ends of the wooden rods.
2. Measure and cut the string.
Prepare 2 lengths of string, with one longer than the other. The length that drops down with the washer or weight should be the longer piece. Cut one section to about 3.5 feet and the second to around 5.5 feet. Exact measurements are not essential, provided one string is clearly longer than the other.
3. Secure the short string to the screw hooks.
4. Place the washers on the long string.
Thread the washers onto the longer string. Only enough weight is needed to make the string hang downward by itself.
5. Fasten the long string to the screw hooks.
At this point, your bubble wand should be assembled and resemble the following:
To create giant bubbles, you will also need homemade giant bubble mixture, or you can purchase one. Glycerin helps the bubbles remain intact longer instead of bursting immediately. You may also want to try making bouncing bubbles.
Making Giant Bubble Mixture
- Combine 6 cups of water, 1.5 cups of dish soap (Dawn is our preferred brand), 1/4 cup of food-grade glycerin and 1 tbsp. of baking powder.
- Stir everything together, then leave the mixture overnight so the glycerin has time to work.
Note: When using the entire batch of bubble mixture, we advise against doing so on grass. A concentrated spill from the container could damage the lawn. For only a few bubbles, this should not be an issue; otherwise, set the container on a sidewalk or driveway.
