Got a stack of offcuts and a couple of spare hours? Then this build is ideal for you! We’re using this quarantine period productively and tackling some of those little projects that have been waiting far too long. I recently relocated to the #WoodhouseWorkshop and have been deciding where everything should go. Even though I already have my primary workbench and the one supporting my X-carve, I soon discovered that I needed a compact, uncomplicated workbench that I could move around the shop as I worked. This project was quick, enjoyable, and cost-free for the whole family – my kids pitched in and helped assemble the workbench in only a few hours, while I recorded our complete building experience in my Instagram stories (“workbench” highlights).
This workbench stands 32 inches high, a comfortable height for me since I’m 5’5″. However, adjusting the plans for a taller version is quite simple if that would suit you better. Simply change the leg lengths so they are longer or shorter than the measurements shown in the plan. I also had these rolling casters stored away, and I appreciate them because they raise the bench off the floor when activated. After rolling it into position, you can release the casters, allowing the bench to settle firmly and safely on the ground.
Collect a few 2x4s along with some plywood, and start assembling! If your scrap plywood supply is limited, the lower shelf can instead be built from 1x3s, 1x4s, or 1x6s if those are available. Arrange the boards with gaps between them so they cover the full length. Since the bottom shelf offers lots of clearance, it will be an excellent place for storing my larger stationary equipment, such as my thickness planer and bench sander.
