The Best Makes Ever Series is a collection of artistic and creative videos that Art Crafty Kids and I created for Sky Kids UK between 2020 and 2022. They were developed to introduce children to enjoyable art and craft projects using everyday supplies and limited resources. This made it possible for everyone to participate and have fun! Now let’s make our simple yarn-wrapped birds!
Materials required for these Easter Chick Decorations:
Using newspaper for part of this project allows you to use less yarn, making the craft more affordable and environmentally friendly!
- One sheet of newspaper
- Yarn remnants
- Felt scraps (card scraps would work as an alternative)
- 2 Beads (optional) & a small piece of tape
- Pair of scissors
- Strong glue
Note: our little newspaper birds were covered with ONE shade of yarn, but you can certainly combine your yarn and add plenty of different colors – either one after another or all at once! As with the entire Best Makes Ever series, WORK with what you ALREADY HAVE!

Making an Adorable Yarn Bird
Let’s begin creating this incredibly cute Easter chick decoration! We really enjoy crafting with both yarn and newspapers! It certainly makes a lovely little Easter Newspaper Craft!
Form the newspaper into a ball
Make the newspaper ball as compact and spherical as you can.
Place in the yarn and begin wrapping the bird
Locate a small opening in the newspaper ball and “place” the yarn inside. There is no need to glue it; simply keep it held in position during the first one or two wraps.
Next, wrap the yarn around the newspaper ball. Continue rotating it so the yarn covers the entire ball evenly.
Secure the yarn from the yarn ball
When your yarn ball looks the way you want, trim the thread.
Pass it through once, then tie it securely.
Leave a small length of yarn for hanging (so avoid cutting it too close).
Prepare felt pieces for the bird’s features
Next, cut out a few felt pieces for your bird (cardboard would work for this as well), including:
- a beak (in the shape of a diamond, since it will be folded in half)
- two eyes
- two wings (shaped like three-bump hearts with the points removed)
Attach your bird’s features
Begin by attaching the beak – but be SURE to see how the bird will hang first, so it isn’t glued in the incorrect spot.
Bend the diamond-shaped beak in half, apply a small amount of glue to the fold, and hold it securely.
Attach the eyes.
Stick on the wings!
Give your adorable yarn bird ornament dangling feet
I really enjoy this handy “trick” of placing tape on the end of your yarn to make threading the feet beads much simpler! Just wrap a piece of tape around the yarn’s end, then trim it slightly for a tidier finish and a “shoelace” effect.
You can now thread on the first bead.
After that, pass the yarn through the bottom of the body.
Thread on the second bead, then tie a knot to secure it.
Adjust the yarn legs as needed to ensure they are the proper length.
